EltonJohn1GnomeoAndJuliet Interview With Elton John For Gnomeo and Juliet

Trumping The Lion King soundtrack seems like an unrealistic aspiration for Sir. Elton John, composer and executive producer of  Kelly Asbury’s animated feature, Gnomeo and Juliet. While effort is most certainly noted, the iconic musician scored the picture with a variety of original tracks as well as some of his legendary jams – and the original tracks we’re not exactly gems to write home about.

Regardless, we were fortunate enough to hit the press conference for this child-proof Shakespeare adaptation and hear Sir. Elton’s two cents on the 11 year extravaganza preceding the picture.

Check out the interview below…

Was original music always the plan for the film?

Sir Elton John: Originally it wasn’t gonna be all my music, but when Disney Studios really got a hold of this project and suggested that we we write new songs for it I thought it was a good idea. I’d never done that before.  I enlisted the help of James Newton Howard, a famous arranger in this town, who actually used to be in my band. I had a great relationship with him. And from that point on I really handed it over to James and the rest of the team.

Rumor has it that development took roughly 11 years..

Elton John: You have to write the songs quite a long time ahead, because of story boards and placement. We actually wrote four new songs for the movie and two got left out, the story boards changed, the story evolves, and things get left by the wayside. You have to accept it when you write for a musical or animation movie.

Oddly the fiasco between the “reds” and “blues” echo recent events in American society – which has to be purely coincidental…

Elton John: If 11 years ago we had the foresight to do that I’d say we’re fucking geniuses. It just so happens to be at this time, 3 weeks after the president made a speech in Tuscon, a very poignant moment in the history of America after this tragedy happened. I do feel as though there’s a message in this film. Like, we spend so much time hating each other because our parents tell us that’s what we have to do. I grew up conservative because my mom was a conservative. once I realized what conservatives were I changed my mind immediately.

I think the story line is saying we should all get a long, Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, Jews – Democrats/Republicans. In American it’s gotten so far stretched and the rhetoric is so dangerous and so unnecessary. If there’s any message that can come out of this film, which is purely coincidental and the timing is coincidental, then I’m all for it. Because as I grow older it saddens me to see a country I love so much having such a gulf between people sometimes, they don’t meet in the middle. In the film, at the end of this, when they destroy both gardens they say “this is enough, this is ridiculous.”  That sends out a positive message.

With The Lion King and your solo career you’ve always been an advocate of collaboration..

Elton John: With The Lion King it came my way in 1993 thanks to Tim Ryans. I’ve always collaborated in my career as a song writer, I loved the idea and the journey of collaboration with everyone in The Lion King. I’m a team player  Really, that’s why I like doing the musicals. I’ve always had song writing partners. Leave your ego at the door – you have to be prepared to say, ‘Ok, I’m gonna fight for this song but if you really wanna get rid of it, that’s fine’.

You’ve gotta listen to the team as a whole. So many times we convened over these 11 years and you have to be a team player…hold hands when things are going badly and hold hands when things are going well. You really have to be there for everybody else on the team. I always liked that in my career I had the good fortunate of having a long standing writing partners that I’ve been with for 4 years. It’s just another way of sharing a joyful experience. .

You did a track with Lady Gaga for the project!

Elton John: She came to the house last year, we do a ball every year to raise money for aids, she stayed at our house for three days and we mentioned the film and the song and she said she’d love to do it. She added so much of her own magic to the song and she gave it a new life. It was a duet and I was looking for someone to sing it with, and she’s one of my new best friends and I love her to death – it was nice that she was so excited to do it. That was a real plus for us.

The film hits theaters nationwide Friday, February 11!

Noam Murro Will Direct Die Hard 5

Die Hard 5 2 11 11 kc Noam Murro Will Direct Die Hard 5

Earlier today we learned that Bruce Willis was actively interviewing potential candidates to direct the upcoming sequel Die Hard 5. At the time it seemed as if Daniel Espinosa would be the lucky man chosen for the job, but according to Deadline he’s not! The site claims that 20th Century Fox has hired emerging helmer Noam Murro to direct the film.

Who is Noam Murro you ask? “He's a five time DGA  nominated commercials director, won two Golden Lions at Cannes and is taking a big leap up to one of Fox's most important projects.” The key word in that statement is commercials. Die Hard 5 will only be the third film he’s ever helmed following Smart People and Hateship, Friendship, Courtship.

It’s interesting that the studio has gone ahead and hired a director, without Willis officially signed on to star. They’re probably well aware of the actor’s interest and attachment to the character. Ever since Live Free or Die Hard he’s been talking to the media about reprising his role as John McClane for a fifth and even sixth film. It looks like it’s happening!

What do you think of Murro directing Die Hard 5? What should they name the movie?

zooey deschanel 2 2 10 kc Zooey Deschanel Officially Signs on For TV Pilot

Zooey Deschanel is following in the footsteps of her older sister Emily by getting her own TV show. The actress has landed the lead role in a comedy pilot on, you guessed it, the Fox network. According to Variety, Deschanel has officially signed the deal to headline the series from writer Liz Meriwether (No Strings Attached).

The trade reports that the single-cam laffer, known as “Chicks & Dicks” before Fox gave it a green light, is an ensemble project that explores the sexual politics of men and women via a woman who moves in with three boorish men. We can see Deschanel headlining something like this. This is some pretty great casting.

The real question is: who will play the three men? We’d love for Joseph Gordon-Levitt to reunite with the actress but we think he’s had his fair share of television. He grew up on a TV comedy (“30 Rock From the Sun“). Plus, he’s too busy working on more important things like The Dark Knight Rises. We can dream, can’t we?

What do you think of Deschanel heading to the small screen? What other actors should join the cast?

Charlize Theron Joins Prometheus

charlize theron 5 10 10 kc Charlize Theron Joins Prometheus

It’s official: Oscar winner Charlize Theron has joined the cast of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. The film which originally started out as a prequel to Alien, will be headline by Swedish star Noomi Rapace and she’ll get some supporting help from Theron and the extremely talented Michael Fassbender.

The plot for Prometheus hasn’t been revealed but Scott has said this in the past:

"While Alien was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien's DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn't be more pleased to have found the singular tale I'd been searching for, and finally return to this genre that's so close to my heart."

Rapace will star as the lead character Elizabeth Shaw, Fassbender will play an android, and we’re assuming Theron will star as one of the other female leaders on a top secret expedition.

What do you think of Theron joining Prometheus?

1-1 Interview: James McAvoy for Gnomeo and Juliet

james mavoy2 11 11 1 1 Interview: James McAvoy for Gnomeo and Juliet

A 3-D Shakespeare adaptation borderlines ridiculous, and while replacing Romeo and Juliet with Garden Gnomes might send dramaturges off the deep end, Disney’s Gnomeo & Juliet is surprisingly charming. The adorably embellished/child-proof rendition of Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy stars James McAvoy and Emily Blunt and hits theaters nationwide this weekend.

Disney rarely fails to provide fantastic visuals for their animated pictures, and the Elton John compositions certainly adds some flare – but the sweet nature of the adaptation will resonate most with audiences. We we’re fortunate enough to score a one on one with the perfectly charming James McAvoy to chat about his menace of  a character! Check out the interview below..

Gearing any Shakespeare adaptation towards a young audience is certainly risque. Child-proofing a story of such dramatic capacity could potentially challenge the integrity of the material. It was important for these filmmakers to eliminate the PG-13 without butchering the story line. McAvoy notes,

“The story of Romeo and Juliet has a lot of nice morals. It’s got ‘don’t pay attention to preconception and prejudice’ and ‘forgiveness is really important’ – all that’s really good stuff to tell kids. But, everybody dies or commits suicide or takes a drug or kills someone or has sex with someone they shouldn’t be having sex with! So you use Garden Gnomes and give them all these good little morals and tidbits without the suicide, sex, and drugs!”

With only one other animated project under his belt, McAvoy was still relatively new to the recording studio scene. Without a single session with his opposite, Emily Blunt, McAvoy was essentially acting against himself. He notes,

“In animated movies I get paid to hyperventilate and lose my voice. By the end of that I can hardly speak and have psychedelic feelings. There was a lot of ‘Oof! Argh! Ooo! Ah!’ The fact that you’re not working with any other actors is kind of nuts. I always see Romeo as being a bit of a pain in the backside. Very in love with himself, he’s got  a lot of time for himself and sometimes for the ladies…It was important to make him a little bit of a cock of the walk.”

gnomeoandjuliet2 11 11 d 1 1 Interview: James McAvoy for Gnomeo and Juliet

The creative team behind the film, including Sir. Elton John, spent nearly eleven years developing the project, and McAvoy was immediately enticed by their passion for the project…

“They were possibly the most enthusiastic bunch of producers and directors that I’ve ever met, and they loved their project so much and they wanted to share so much and that was really infectious. And then they showed me a little model of the garden gnome that I would play, and I thought “Well, If I’m going to be a garden gnome, I’d like to look like that!”

Next up for McAvoy is the highly anticipated X-Men: First Class alongside Oscar-nominee Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Bacon, Michael Fassbender, Zoe Kravtiz, etc. McAvoy is still in re-shoots and the film is set for release June 3rd…

“I don’t think I’ve ever made such a big movie in such a short period of time. It’s nuts, really. But, we’re getting it done. No movie has ever got enough time. It doesn’t matter how much money you’ve got, and it doesn’t matter how much money you’ve not got. You never finish on time! You’re always up against it and you’re always working up until then end. To get three days off the schedule to come and do press for Gnomeo and Juliet is a nice break, cause it is just non-stop all the time.

The Kelly Asbury directed 3-D picture hits theaters nationwide Friday, February 11th. Check it out now!

Picture 143 Bruce Willis Looking for Die Hard 5 Directors

Bruce Willis isn’t ready for John McClane to die — not yet! The actor is currently on the lookout for a director to helm the next installment of the long running Die Hard franchise. The sequel is being called Die Hard 5 at the moment, and according to Vulture he’s actively interviewing behind the scenes talent.

The site reports that “Willis is taking the initiative and interviewing directors to oversee its development. At the top of his list, we're told, is Jorge Daniel Espinosa.” Espinosa is the man responsible for the upcoming Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds thriller Safe House. On the script front, we’re hearing that 20th Century Fox was less than thrilled with the most recent draft for Die Hard 5 by Skip Woods.

Should we really be shocked that Woods’ screenplay was lacking? This is the same guy who wrote X-Men Origins Wolverine and last summer’s The A-Team. Meanwhile, Willis is currently in negotiations to star in Stephen Frears’s Lay the Favorite, Take the Dog. If he signs on he’ll star opposite The Town’s Rebecca Hall as Dink Heimowitz, a cantankerous ex–New York bookmaker.

What do you think of Willis’ future Die Hard plans?

Red State Angarano Braun Gallner1 Kevin Smith Screens Red State for NYPD as a Sorry for Cop Out

Giving back to those you mocked! If there’s one thing Kevin Smith is good at, it’s owning up to his past and makings amends (we’ll see how that goes with distributors for his next film). This time around he’s got to say sorry to the NYPD for his portrayal of them in his last film Cop Out. Smith announced today that he will be giving the New York Police Department tickets to attend the first date of his national Red State Tour at Radio City Music Hall on March 5, 2011.

Smith is calling it a “free date night for the city's finest,” I’m not sure how Police Officers will respond to a date offer from Smith especially in a film about “Three boys go into the woods to find sex. Instead, they find God” BUT the tickets for the Radio City Music Hall screening of the film are one hot ticket, so hopefully they’ll take him up on it. It would be quite funny if they all took the block of tickets reserved for them and their significant others and eBayed them.

Smith said, "I can't think of a better way to say 'I'm Sorry' for Cop Out than to give tickets to the New York Police Department." He also added that if they attend, "It will be the safest premiere on the planet."

The Red State Tour kicks off in New York City on March 5, 2011 before visiting 16 cities around the country. The tour features a screening of Red State starring Michael Parks, John Goodman and Melissa Leo, and of course will be followed by a live appearance from Kevin Smith where he will discuss the film — prepare to settle in for a while.

Tickets are available to the general public now via Ticketmaster. For a full list of tour dates, visit www.coopersdell.com.

Who thinks that the cops will take him up on his offer?

James Franco Cast in Akira?

james franco 3 1 11 kc James Franco Cast in Akira?

Do you remember back in November when there were rumors about Zac Efron starring in the Akira movie? Well, now there’s news that another actor has dibs on a primary role in the film. According to a report from JustJared, Oscar nominee James Franco is in talks to star. For some of you this could be considered a good and a bad thing. It’s great because the film might be out of Efron’s orbit, but bad because Franco doesn’t exactly fit in with the Akira world.

Warner Bros will join forces with Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way to take on the big screen adaptation. The movie will be based on anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo's 6-volume graphic novel that's become a worldwide phenomenon among fans. For years there's been talk of adapting the property but the majority of the plans have fallen through — until now.

The studio has hired Albert Hughes to direct the feature, and Franco is in talks to play Kaneda. Hmm, not to be funny but Franco doesn’t look like a Kaneda to us. Are they going to keep all the Asian names and settings but hire Caucasian actors? That doesn’t make any sense.

Is it just us, or are they trying to cast this man in EVERYTHING?!

What do you think of Franco playing Kaneda? Do you think he’s the right pick?

Charlie’s Angels New Bosley is Transformers 2 Star Ramon Rodriguez

ramon rodriguez 2 11 11 kc Charlies Angels New Bosley is Transformers 2 Star Ramon Rodriguez

Over the past few weeks, ABC has been fast tracking the development of their “Charlie’s Angels” reboot. The main three actresses have already been cast and they’re Annie Ilonzeh, Minka Kelly, and Racheal Taylor. Next, there was a huge void left for who would play their handler John Bosley, and the golden voice Charlie Townsend. The latter character hasn’t been confirmed but the new Bosley has and he’s none other than Ramon Rodriguez!

According to EW, Rodriguez has joined the cast of the new “Charlie’s Angels” as the assistant to Mr. Townsend and the liaison between him and the women. The role was previously played by David Doyle in the television series, Bill Murray in the 2000 feature adaptation, and Bernie Mac in the 2003 sequel, Full Throttle.

We can admit that in the film versions, the actors chosen for Bosely have definitely wavered from Doyle but Rodriguez is pushing it. He’s young, attractive…and did we mention young? Bosley needs to be older and more of a mentor than a peer. This is an interesting casting choice that proves that they’re definitely going into another direction with the tone of the show.

What do you think of Rodriguez as the new Bosley?

J. Edgar will cover the head of the FBI and his reign from its creation in 1935 to his death in 1972. The film will be produced by Brian Grazer and has a script written by Oscar winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (Milk). The film stars DiCaprio, Naomi Watts, Ed Westwick, Josh Lucas, Damon Herriman, and Ken Howard.

Hammer plays lawyer-turned-FBI-official Clyde Tolson, whom was also rumored to be Hoover's lover. This was the role that Joaquin Phoenix was speculated to play. Tolson was the associate director of the FBI from 1947 to 1972. He was in daily close contact with Hoover at the office and the pair often dined, socialized in night clubs, and even vacationed together.

Dench will star as Hoover’s mother Anne Marie, and as you can see from these photos he’s very close to her.

Gnomeo and Juliet: Movie Review

GnomeoAndJuliet1 Gnomeo and Juliet: Movie Review

Gnomeo, Gnomeo where for art thou, Gnomeo? He’s drag racing a lawnmower in your backyard! Emily Blunt, James McAvoy and Michael Cane star in this hoot of an Shakespeare adaptation, Gnomeo & Juliet. The Kelly Asbury directed 3-D picture hits theaters nationwide Friday, January 21st. Check out the review below…

The Players:

The Plot:

We’re working with an adorably embellished/child-proof rendition of Shakespeare’s Romeo And Juliet. Gnomeo (McAvoy) of the “blues” and Juliet of the “reds” exist in competing backyards among fellow garden gnomes, mushrooms, bunnies, what have you. Battles between lawnmowers, weed-whackers, and miracle grow keep these pint sized statues at odds, until Gnomeo and Juliet meet and sparks fly. You know the rest.

The Good:

  • Adaptation: We’ve seen our fair share of both impressive and abominable Shakespeare adaptations, but we’ve yet to see one geared towards kids. Asbury re-writes several pivotal story points to better suit her target audience – most notably, no deaths occur. And, let’s be real, unless you’re incredibly stoned or over the age of 13, 3-D gnome duels and suicide sessions don’t make for .
  • Humor: Again, the film is aimed to please a younger demographic but I’m happy to report that Asbury works in some subtle adult humor – some of it being blatantly sexual, actually. Cheers!
  • Animation: It’s a visually pleasing picture from the character illustrations to the exotic color palettes to the hysterical “fight” choreography. (Also note the FABULOUS dance number before the closing credits).

The Bad:

  • Music: It pains me to make any remotely negative comment towards anythin Sir. Elton John has touched, but there’s no way to cushion the truth here: The Music Was Bad. John threw in a measure or two from some of his classic jams (which were obviously awesome) but the original tunes couldn’t have been less catchy. Fail.

Overall:

It’s not easy to hate on a kids movie, but it’s not any easier to shower it with praise. You get what the genre typically delivers.

Rating: 7/10

Check out the film in theaters starting February 11th!

Miley Cyrus is going to come face to face with her alter ego on “Saturday Night Live.” The young singer/actress will appear on an upcoming episode of the sketch comedy series this spring. People.com has confirmed that she’ll take the stage as the host but not the musical guest. They’ll leave that job for someone else (perhaps someone better?)

Cyrus’ episode will air on March 5th and it will mark her first time hosting the show. The 18 year old has appeared on the series multiple times — as a parody with the sketch entitled, “The Miley Cyrus Show.” It’s where newcomer Vanessa Bayer plays the actress and Jason Sudeikis typically fills in for her dad Billy Ray.

They can’t have the actress on the show without her appearance during that sketch. If both Mileys are in the same place at the same time, do you think the world would explode? There are so many things they can do to make fun of her, but we’re not sure if she’s game for their SNL extremes. Do you think they’ll be a bong joke in there somewhere?

What do you think of Miley Cyrus hosting an episode of SNL? Do you think she has what it takes?
