The Mechanic Red Band Trailer

Jason Statham is back and he’s blowing more sh*t up with the help of his sidekick Ben Foster. The British actor stars in the upcoming remake of the seventies action flick The Mechanic. Over at IGN, they got first dibs on the new red band trailer for the movie that’s filled with explosions and plenty of gun play. Take a look…

In The Mechanic, Arthur Bishop (Statham) is an elite assassin with a strict code and unique talent for cleanly eliminating targets. It's a job that requires professional perfection and total detachment, and Bishop is the best in the business. But when his mentor and close friend Harry (Donald Sutherland) is murdered, Bishop is anything but detached. His next assignment is self-imposed – he wants those responsible dead. His mission grows complicated when Harry's son Steve (Foster) approaches him with the same vengeful goal and a determination to learn Bishop's trade.

We have a soft place in our hearts for the original version of this movie, but we like Statham and we love Foster. We might give it a chance.

The Mechanic is directed by Simon West and is scheduled to hit theaters on January 28.

Whenever there’s a crime committed against women that makes its way into the media, you better believe that Lifetime will be ready and willing to make a movie about it. The network for women has shifted their focus to the internet with the “based on a true story” feature The Craigslist Killer. The film is scheduled to air Monday night (this evening) at 9 pm, check out the trailer below…

If you’ve been living under a rock and have no idea who or what The Craigslist Killer is, let us bring you up to speed. The story centers around Philip Markoff, the “Boston University medical student, charged with the 2009 murder of Julissa Brisman, a masseuse he was said to have met with via a Craigslist appointment.” Markoff pleaded not guilty to the charges and was set to go on trial this month but he committed suicide in his jail cell last August.

The feature adaptation stars William Baldwin doing his best no nonsense cop routine, Agnes Bruckner (what happened to her career?), and Jake McDormand, as the title character. Doesn’t this movie remind you of those old NBC Monday night flicks? Those were the days.

Update: The poster is a fake. It seemed too good to be true.

Over on the UK site HeyUGuys, they claim to have found the first teaser poster for the upcoming sequel A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas. It seems a little strange that it would be released right after Christmas and New Years considering its theme, but they say it’s the real deal. Check out the full sized one-sheet below…

The site got a heads up on the poster from a reader, who also claims that the first teaser trailer and the official movie site aren’t too far behind. As you can see they went with a decorated marijuana leaf as the focal point of the poster. No surprise there. We’re not sure what the plot of the film will entail (weed perhaps?) but we do expect to see Neil Patrick Harris return alongside Danny Trejo, Patton Oswalt, Thomas Lennon, Danneel Harris, Paula Garcés, Elias Koteas.

A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas is directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson, and marks the return of John Cho and Kal Penn in the title roles. We’re sure the film will hit theaters sometime late next year. What do you think?

James Franco to Write and Direct Faulkner and McCarthy

james franco 3 1 11 kc James Franco to Write and Direct Faulkner and McCarthy

James Franco is putting his multiple college degrees to work. The actor who went back to school for screenwriting and directing has decided to put those skills to the test. According to Showbiz411, he’ll direct and pen scripts based on the works of William Faulkner and Cormac McCarthy. Someone’s pulling double duty!

The site claims that Franco is currently in talks to direct a feature version of Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying from his own screenplay. He’s been in contact with the late author’s estate for a while, and he already has a commitment deal from 20th Century Fox. Franco hopes to get the production off the ground by next spring.

Franco also has his eye on Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian, which he’s also interested in writing and directing next year. McCarthy previously provided the source material for the drama The Road, which starred Viggo Mortensen.

Back in December, Franco was also said to be directing a biopic based on the life the late actor Sal Mineo. Where is Franco going to find the time to do all of this stuff? We’ll just have to wait and see how much of this is fact and how much of it is fiction.

What do you think of Franco’s move to directing and writing?

The cast for the feature debut of writer-producer-turned-director Alex Kurtzman is really coming together. THR is reporting that Olivia Wilde (who worked with the director on Cowboys & Aliens) has signed on to star in Welcome to People alongside Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks.

The premise of Welcome to People centers on "a man who must deliver $150,000 in cash to an alcoholic sister he didn't know he had after the death of their father. Without telling her who he is, the guy also gets involved in the life of her angry 12-year old son." Pine stars as the man, while Banks plays his drunk sibling. Wilde has been cast in the role of Hannah, the girlfriend of Pine’s character.

Kurtzman co-wrote the screenplay for the film with his longtime collaborator Roberto Orci, who will also help him produce via their DreamWorks-based Paper Products company.

Olivia Wilde is seriously everywhere. She’s come along way since her stint on the short-lived Fox drama “Skin.” Does anyone else remember that show? It lasted for like six episodes back in 2003. No? Just us?

The cast of Neill Blomkamp’s highly anticipated new film Elysium has been infused with a multiple Oscar winner. According to Deadline, Jodie Foster has just signed on to co-star in the film alongside Matt Damon and Sharlto Copley. Elysium is the follow up project to Blomkamp’s solid feature film debut District 9.

The plot for Elysium has been described as being "set in the far future on another planet and is filled with many sociopolitical ideas wrapped up inside a Hollywood action film." Any and all other details regarding the plot are being kept under lock and key. We’re also not sure what type of roles Copley, Damon, and Foster are supposed to play.

Foster has been in the news over the past year regarding her work behind the scenes as the director of the much talked about comedy The Beaver. The film stars Mel Gibson, and is expected to hit theaters on April 11. Foster is also set to appear in God of Carnage, the Roman Polanski-directed adaptation of Yasmina Reza’s Tony-winning play. SundanceNow the Answer For Filmmakers and Viewers

Posted: 03 Jan 2011 11:59 AM PST

sundance now1 3 11 SundanceNow the Answer For Filmmakers and Viewers

Last year I made my first film, Do Not Disturb. After I finished (or thought that I had finished) making the film I couldn’t have been happier. A good friend of mine and successful Producer said “well, have you sold it yet? Is it getting released?” I said, “no,” and he then told me some of the most important information anyone could have told me “well then you’re only half-way done. Half of making a film is getting people to see it.” Damn! How do I do that?

The problem is with film festivals is that everyone and their mother is trying to get into them, and unless you’ve gone through the right programs sponsored by the festival, know the right people, or have enough star power to make them not care, chances are you’ll be over-looked (unless you’ve made a documentary but I’ll talk about that another time). It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it is a constant struggle that up and coming filmmakers have to accept.

The problem becomes, how do you get people to see your movie? Hell, even if you get into Sundance, between the busy schedule of films and people not being able to get there, your audience is still limited and there is no guarantee that your film will be bought and even if it is bought that it will ever be distributed and see the light of the big screen.

So your next idea is how to use the Internet to your advantage, but you don’t want to upload it to YouTube and have it get lost in the abyss of singing cats and drunken idiots falling over in a variety of ways, you want a name that you and people who are going to watch your film can trust. That’s when I got an e-mail telling me about a little thing called SundanceNow and this is what it said…

The idea for SundanceNow came from the lack of a single online destination where real independent film fans could find, watch instantly and discuss a broad range of independent, hard to find films from around the globe. We believe that SundanceNow fills that void by bringing hundreds of films to your computer screen. You can watch them immediately (and legally) and find several films from the same director or of the same genre quickly and easily. In addition, new films are constantly being added to the service so there’s always a reason to come back.

SundanceNow is a place for anyone interested in independent films both American and worldwide – from the die-hard fans, who we hope will become active members of our community, to those interested in browsing our extensive list of different genres and sampling something new.

Well isn’t that nice! A place for filmmakers to go to get an audience. A place where people can legally watch the many films that deserve audiences but just can’t get them! AND a way for viewers who aren’t willing to freeze their asses off to be able to see the quality films coming out of the festival and through their amazing programs.

Sounds like a win, win for all involved!

Check it out at SundanceNow.com or on their Facebook page!

What do you think? Will you tune in?

Quentin Tarantino’s Top 20 Movies of 2010

Quentin Tarantino Quentin Tarantinos Top 20 Movies of 2010

Over the past couple weeks we’ve been posting various end of the year lists that recognize the best that 2010 had to offer. No retrospective would be complete without the input of director and screenwriter, Quentin Tarantino. He’s revealed his top 20 films of 2010, and while most of them are well deserved, one pick in particular has us scratching our heads. Take a look…

1.) Toy Story 3
2.) The Social Network
3.) Animal Kingdom
4.) I Am Love
5.) Tangled
6.) True Grit
7.) The Town
8.) Greenberg
9.) Cyrus
10.) Enter The Void
11.) Kick-Ass
12.) Knight and Day
13.) Get Him To The Greek
14.) The Fighter
15.) The King's Speech
16.) The Kids Are All Right
17.) How to Train Your Dragon
18.) Robin Hood
19.) Amer
20.) Jackass 3D

We’re happy to see that the Australian crime drama Animal Kingdom made it into his top three. The film is a bit long in the tooth but it’s a refreshing and simplistic take on the genre. Jackass 3D is a bit of a shock, but if he judged it on the use of 3D it deserves a place on the list. The prank-filled sequel made better use of the technology than most major tentpoles last year.

Our biggest concern though is Robin Hood. We love Ridley Scott but we couldn’t get down with his interpretation of the character and his legacy. It was filled with talented actors but the chemistry wasn’t there. The film centers on Robin before he becomes the legend so all the great stuff you expect from him doesn’t occur. He only uses an arrow once or twice in the entire movie and that’s just wrong!

What do you think of Tarantino’s list?

Forbidden Planet’s Anne Francis Dies at 80

anne francis 3 12 11 kc Forbidden Planets Anne Francis Dies at 80

A little over a month after the death of legendary actor Leslie Nielsen, his Forbidden Planet co-star Anne Francis has also passed away. Both Nielsen and Francis appeared in the 1956 cult sci-fi film alongside Walter Pidgeon. She played the role of Altaira, Pidgeon’s beautiful daughter and Nielsen’s love interest. The movie recently aired Sunday evening on the TCM network, which makes the news of her death even more surreal.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Francis died on Sunday after a long battle with lung cancer. She was diagnosed with the disease in 2007. The actress had a steady career in both television and film during the fifties and sixties. Besides her role in Forbidden Planet she also appeared in Blackboard Jungle, The Hired Gun, Don’t Go Near the Water, Brainstorm, Funny Girl and Hook, Line and Sinker.

She played the title character in the television series “Honey West,” and was the first female detective on TV. West was introduced to the world via an episode of another series, “Burke’s Law.” Even though Francis never became a huge movie star she was revered in smaller circles. Her portrayal of Altaira in Forbidden Planet has been cemented in sci-fi history.

Francis is survived by her daughters Jane and Maggie, and a grandson.

R.I.P. Anne Francis.
