Sanctum: Movie Review

sanctum2 3 11 Sanctum: Movie Review

The heavily marketed “James Cameron Production” Sanctum, directed by the clearly inexperienced Alister Grierson swamps theaters this Friday. It’s safe to assume that most people would interpret Cameron’s E.P. credit as a ringing endorsement of quality cinema. I, however, know it to be Universal’s deceptive maneuver to bait fools to the box office.

Check out the review below…

The Players:

The Plot:

Sanctum follows a team of underwater cave divers on a treacherous expedition to the largest and least accessible cave system on the planet. The game plan is to retrace a previously explored route to reach a “base camp” that will allow the group to conduct research. Once deep inside the cave system, shit hits the fan! Time to fight raging water, deadly terrain, and one of the diver’s inexperienced girlfriends (that they pragmatically brought with them).

The God:

  • Visuals: The picture is fantastically photographed. Aesthetically, every frame captures the vastness of this underwater setting and the 3D only amplifies the scenic depth.
  • Adventure: These moments were few and far between, but the audience was afforded a little underwater excitement that kept you on the edge of your seat.

The Bad:

  • Script: This 3D crazed group of filmmakers spent a little too much time on technology and not enough on content. The writing is abominable – laugh out loud abominable. From the poorly structured story to the less than developed characters, Sanctum’s script seemed like a lousy first draft.
  • Performances: Can’t a “James Cameron Production” afford to hire some decent actors? There isn’t a single cast member that’s remotely recognizable, which could be refreshing for a super commercial picture – but none of them could deliver. If you’re going to hire shitty actors, at least hire some of the famous ones!
  • Grierson: This is Mr. Grierson’s SECOND feature film, and it’s painfully apparent. He didn’t quite commit to any specific tone or style of story-telling here.

Overall:

Do. Not. See. This. Movie.

Rating: 2/10

Eva Green Joins Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows

eva green 14 Eva Green Joins Tim Burtons Dark Shadows

Just yesterday we learned that Jackie Earle Haley and Bella Heathcoate were in talks to join Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows adaptation, and today another actor can be added to the list. According to Deadline, French star Eva Green has been cast in the film as the female lead opposite Johnny Depp.

Green is set to play Angelique, the powerful witch who maintained a love hate relationship with the vampire Barnabas Collins (Depp). Haley is up for the part of Willie Loomis, while Heathcoate is in talks to play Victoria Winters, the young governess of the Collins estate. Loomis is a notorious con artist who comes to Collinwood bent on swindling the reclusive matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard. But instead of finding fortune he becomes the whipping boy of the vampire Barnabas.

Dark Shadows is expected to begin filming sometime this year. The film is based on the Gothic themed soap opera that ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971. It reappeared briefly in the early nineties on NBC as a weekly prime time series, but the new format didn't stick and neither did the viewers.

What do you think of Green joining the cast of Dark Shadows? Are you interested in seeing the adaptation?

Interview: James Cameron For Sanctum

JamesCameronSanctum1 Interview: James Cameron For Sanctum

Sanctum’s Australian director Alister Grierson’s has one source of audience bait: James Cameron’s name in enormous, bold font in the center of his billboards. The multi-Oscar winning director/writer/producer acts as an EP on this shipwreck of a film (pun INTENDED) about stranded (!!!) scuba divers. Sanctum is a not a Cameron film, it’s very much a project that he sat back on and lent his name to, but what kind of fool forgoes an opportunity to speak with James Cameron?

We were fortunate enough to sit down with the filmmaker to discuss his film. Check out the interview below…

You’ve clearly taken particular interest in water related adventure films, shipwrecks specifically. There’s talk that you’ve considered making a documentary on the subject…

James Cameron: We love shipwrecks. There are plenty of good ones still out there! The Ed Fitz is one I've wanted to explore because we have the technology and robotics to go inside and map the material and so on, but we've already done that with Titanic. It'd be great to go look for the Indianapolis, the other midway wrecks. The thing fore me is I've kind of had an epiphany over the last year, that I could do that kind of exploring which is really archeology slash history for the rest of my life, and have great fun doing it. But the aftermath of Avatar was that there was this really tremendous feet back from the environmental community.

I had an opportunity to help them put a spot light on issues that weren't getting enough media attention. There's a mission in this, I need to focus on that and quit exploring shipwrecks, quite frankly. I also feel like as a civilization we're heading towards a cliff with issues of energy and climate change – these are thing that have concerned me for most of my adult life. I want do docs, if I'm going to put that time and energy in a doc, it should be on those subjects. It should do some tangible good in areas that I'm deeply concerned about – so shipwrecks are gonna wait.

Like the majority of your films, Sanctum features a story of survival…

James Cameron: Yeah, we wanted to do a survival story. We were researching the psychology of survival before we crafted the story. It was based on something that happened to Andrew, but we jumped off from that to tell a fictional story. Its based in true events, both the things that happened to Andrew and incidents that happened on other cave diving exhibitions. Everything you see happened to somebody somewhere. In crafting the story we studied to psychology of survival. We wanted to get into that thing that happens inside people where they have to adjust to a situation that appears completely hopeless. Some people can make that adjustment, some can't. Some people become more heroic then they could've imagined, other people who you think of as leaders can become quite cowardly. I think the appeal for audiences in general is to test themselves against the circumstances of the film. What would I do? I can barely breath watching this let a lone do it?

George’s moment of decompression sickness is one of the most gripping scenes in the picture, can you elaborate on what exactly DCS entails?

James Cameron: You got a bottle of coke, you pop the lid. Bubbles form, why? Because the cap was keeping the pressure on the gas that was in solution. When you scuba dive, you're breathing gas under pressure, it goes into your blood. In solution, no problem, it'll come back out slowly if you surface slowly. If you come up too fast it's like popping that lid – bubbles form in your blood stream, lights out. So, that's what DCS is. It manifests itself in extreme pain - all the things you saw George going through. It happened because they surfaced too fast. Every diver would know and think the movie is wasting too much time explaining it – but its very hard to bring an audience up to speed with that.

I think it’s safe to argue that you’re a bonafide diver/underwater explorer. Any crazy discoveries over the years?

James Cameron:  Absolutely. Almost anytime you dive you see something you haven't seen before. Doesn't mean science hasn't seen it before, but the diver probably hasn't seen it. If you're observant there will always be some damn thing you haven't seen before, some critter. When you dive in the deep ocean like we did on some of our exhibitions, you might see things that nobody has ever seen before – and we did! We imaged some creatures that when we came back and showed it to the marine biologists, they said "We don't know what that is, sure wish you woulda caught it" it was 7 ft in diameter! How we gonna catch it?

The movie was almost entirely critter-free, any particular reason?

James Cameron: There aren’t many caves. We didn't focus on that because we didn't want it to be about that, about animals. We didn't want people thinking we were leaning towards a monster story. We stayed away from the super natural other than a couple of shots of the Shaman to give it a little bit of an aura. But we weren't saying there were demons or monsters in the cave. We wanted to make sure people understood this was a human story, a human drama of people trying to survive in a hopeless situation.

The entertainment industry on the whole will argue that you’ve revolutionized 3D film. What’s your honing process like along the lines of cameras?

James Cameron: Every time my cameras go out on a movie – in this case one of my own films, or others like Tron – every time they go out we learn something new. And we take what we know and put it into the next generation of camera. So we're constantly improving, it's like building a race car, racing it and running back to the shop and working with it some more, tinkering with it to improve it. We get a lot of feedback from filmmakers and directors of photography. The cameras are smaller, lighter, smarter, doing more of the work for the crew. What I wanna see is everybody able to use them. It'll lift the entire market, I don't want to just be associated with a few good 3D movies and have audiences say the other ones are crap. Everyone is gonna do their 3D slightly differently, the same way people deal with color differently. You have to think of 3D like color or sound, a part of the creative palette that we paint with. Not this whole new thing that redefines the medium. That's why people get stuck.

The film has a nationwide release Friday, February 4th. Check back for the review!

Tom Cruise Eyeing Guillermo del Toro’s Mountains of Madness

Tom Cruise 3 2 11 kc Tom Cruise Eyeing Guillermo del Toros Mountains of Madness

A little while ago we heard that Tom Cruise was interested in starring in the Guillermo del Toro directed, James Cameron produced, At The Mountains of Madness. The film is based on the H.P. Lovecraft novella, and the duo are looking to create an R-rated, 3D adaptation of the story. While out promoting Sanctum, Cameron spoke to MTV about Cruise’s potential involvement and everything seems to be looking up…

According to Cameron:

"Tom [Cruise] wants to do the picture. I don't think we have a deal with him yet, but we're hoping to get that closed soon. Guillermo is madly working on a new draft of the script. Hopefully we'll be shooting by June or July."

What else does Cruise have up his sleeve exactly? Is there a specific reason why this deal can’t happen now? Granted he’s busy working on Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol, but that film shoot shouldn’t last until June. Come on now, Tom.

The story of At Mountains of Madness will center on an expedition in Antarctica that reveals the true origin of humanity that’s hidden behind the highest mountains. Aliens? Monsters? Who knows!

What do you think of Cruise possibly starring in At the Mountains of Madness?

Box Office Predictions: The Roommate, James Cameron To Win Super Bowl Weekend

THE ROOMMATE 550x366 Box Office Predictions: The Roommate, James Cameron To Win Super Bowl Weekend

With a majority of the country’s eyes glued to the big screen for Sunday’s Super Bowl, look for this weekend’s  box office to be ruled by low-grade teen horror fare with Gossip Girl Alum Leighton Meester’s The Roommate, Oscar Nominees such as The King’s Speech, action flick holdovers The Mechanic/The Green Hornet and James Cameron’s Sanctum.

And Now For Our Predictions…..

#1 The Roommate

The movie going public has shown that they are willing to pay top dollar for low-grade horror/thriller/teen fare in the winter months with the likes of The Haunting in Connecticut to The Last House On The Left all opening to solid numbers. Throw in a C-level TV star in Gossip Girl Leighton Meester, tabloid favorite Minka Kelly( Derek Jeter’s Girlfriend), and The Roommate will open at the #1 spot.

Our Prediction:$12-13M Opening weekend

#2 Sanctum

The King Of The World Mr.James Cameron returns to theaters abet as a producer on the thriller Sanctum. While the film boast no stars whatsoever, Cameron’s name alone added with the higher 3D ticket prices should help land Sanctum at the #2 spot this weekend.

Our Prediction: $10-11M Opening.weekend.

#3 No Strings Attached

With a solid opening weekend, and better than average second weekend hold, No Strings Attached has become the go to romantic comedy date movie. The Super Bowl should steal away some moving going couples, but look for the Ashton Kutcher/Natalie Portman film to hold steady at #3.

Our Prediction: $9M Weekend Box Office

#4 The King’s Speech

In just a matter of weeks the The King’s Speech has gone from Oscar hopeful to Oscar front runner and a likely $100m grossing film. Add in last weekend’s surge in box office receipts , strong week-week declines, and The King’s Speech should land at the # 4 spot this weekend.

Our Prediction: $8M Weekend Box Office.

#5 The Rite

Anthony Hopkins scored a number one opening last weekend with The Rite, however horrid reviews, likely poor word of mouth, and the super bowl will knock The Rite all the way down to the number #5 spot this weekend.

And Now For The Rest Of The Top Ten.

#6 The Mechanic

Our Prediction: $6.5-7M Weekend Box Office

#7 True Grit

Our Prediction: $6M Weekend Box Office

#8 The Green Hornet

Our Prediction: $5.5-6M Weekend Box Office.

#9 The Black Swan

Our Prediction: $4.5M Weekend Box Office.

#10 The Fighter

Our Prediction $3.5M Weekend Box Office

We can’t wait for this movie to come out. It looks hilarious and a lot different from all the other animated films flooding the market.

Rango centers on a chameleon who's going through an identity crisis and embarks on a cross-country journey where he ends up in the dangerous SouthWest territory. Instead of the animals being portrayed as creatures in the wild they're given human characteristics, a cowboy/mariachi wardrobe, and a Western genre vibe.

The voice cast for the film includes, Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy, Harry Dean Stanton, Ray Winstone, and Timothy Olyphant.

Rango is scheduled to hit theaters on March 4, 2011.

“There will never be another Camelot.” Those are the daunting words that kickstart the trailer for the miniseries The Kennedys. The made for TV movie will air on the Reelz Channel after a long, long deliberation among networks. It was originally intended to premiere on The History Channel but they opted out after seeing the first cut of the finished product. Check out the new trailer that recently debuted on Reelz…

Can you say drama? This takes us back to the days when TV movies were all the rage. Do you remember the midnineties Kennedy biopic, which starred Patrick Dempsey has John F. Kennedy? Here that honor goes to Greg Kinnear. The whole roster is pretty talented, with the female lead going to Katie Holmes, who plays Jackie.

This take on the family’s story definitely shows them in a different light than what we’re used to. Tom Wilkinson is really showing Papa Joe’s true colors as the patriarch of the clan. Are you interested in seeing what else this film has to say about the elite members of Camelot?

The Kennedys will air on April 3 in the U.S., and on March 6 in Canada.

How excited are you? Part I will hit theaters on November 18, 2011 and Part II on November 16, 2012, but before then, you can get your groove on with the "visual soundtrack" for the film.
