Jackie Earle Haley 2 2 11 kc Jackie Earle Haley in Talks to Join Dark Shadows

Jackie Earle Haley is being creepy again. The Oscar nominated actor and former Freddy Krueger will remain on the dark side for the foreseeable future. According to Deadline, Haley is up for a role in Tim Burton’s big screen adaptation of the classic daytime soap Dark Shadows. There’s also word that actress Bella Heathcoate is up for a pivotal part in the revamp. Find out who’s playing who below…

Johnny Depp has already been cast in the role of Barnabas Collins and the site reports that Haley is up for the part of Willie Loomis, while Heathcoate is in talks to play Victoria Winters, the young governess of the Collins estate. Loomis is a notorious con artist who comes to Collinwood bent on swindling the reclusive matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard. But instead of finding fortune he becomes the whipping boy of the vampire Barnabas.

Dark Shadows is expected to begin filming sometime this year. The film is based on the Gothic themed soap opera that ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971. It reappeared briefly in the early nineties on NBC as a weekly prime time series, but the new format didn't stick and neither did the viewers.

Do you think Haley would make a good addition to the Dark Shadows cast?

Gareth Edwards Tells Us What We Want to Hear about Godzilla

Posted: 02 Feb 2011 04:08 PM PST

gareth edwards 5 1 11 kc Gareth Edwards Tells Us What We Want to Hear about Godzilla

We’ve known for some time now that Gareth Edwards‘ the man who wow-ed everyone with his ultra-low budget, first movie, Monsters is set to direct the reboot of another monster production only this time with a budget and a recognizable name to match – Godzilla. While promoting the release of his film Monsters on Blu-ray this week he dropped a few hints as to his latest monstrosity (see what I did there?). Though Godzilla is still in the very early stages, Edwards spoke to Shock Till You Drop very briefly about the production and told us something that we all want him to say…

I guess I will say I'm highly aware – and everyone involved is incredibly aware – of everyone's opinions on what this film has to do and what it has to be. And no one will do anything but the right thing. Without addressing anything specific, everyone knows how important is to get it right.

… basically he’s aware of the pressure and doesn’t plan on f*cking it up. Edwards repeated the sentiment to the London Evening Standard….

Everyone involved knows what the film has to be, what's important to me is that, as well as spectacle, you have to give a shit about what's happening and why.

I have to say, I’m not convinced on the remake but I am convinced by Edwards. When I saw Monsters at LA Film Festival last year I thought three things, A. this guys is smart and has built an entire film around an idea that he doesn’t have to show B. when he does “show” us what we’ve been waiting for, he knows how to handle himself with effects, and C. despite his effort, which I loudly applaud, his story had some issues for me. He proved that he can handle special effects and that he knows how to cultivate tension — which is something very difficult to do — but everything eventually comes back to story.

Now I will say, he was quite honest at the Q&A after the screening and said that he had no real script for the film, they just shot as much as they could and put the story together as they went and had to form the story around locations they could get. Perhaps having a real writer lock down a solid story-line for him will allow him to flourish in the areas he has proved himself in. Or maybe it will suck that raw filmmaker in him dry. OR maybe the screenplay will try so hard to please everyone that everyone BUT ME will like it and I’ll say “remember that film Monsters, now that was a story.”

Only time will tell! The good news is, he told Shock Till You Drop that he won’t be writing this bad boy and seems very humble about stepping forward into this mega-franchise.

One thing is for sure, this guy’s got talent. I for one don’t need another Godzilla film and I wish that they could take someone with his skills and apply it to an original idea — but that’s just not the way the business works. It’s obvious that this guy wants to be a filmmaker so it’s great to see him being given a chance, I just hope that they can make this film both big and and great and that after this they let him do something original — a mind like his shouldn’t be wasted on reiterating old ides. But he’s not the first director to get spun into that web!

In case you haven’t seen Monsters, check out the trailer for it now. And it’s worth renting, streaming, buying if you’ve got the time!

What do you think of Edward’s taking on Godzilla and not writing it?

Steve Zaillian to Write Jack Ryan Reboot

chrispine Steve Zaillian to Write Jack Ryan Reboot

Steve Zaillian is a busy, busy man. A couple weeks ago we learned that the screenwriter would pen the English adaptation of the indie favorite TimeCrimes, and now he’s taking on Jack Ryan. According to Deadline, Zaillian has been tapped to write the revamp of the dormant film franchise, which currently has Chris Pine attached to star.

The title of the Jack Ryan reboot is currently being called Moscow but nothing is set in stone. The film will be directed by “Lost” helmer Jack Bender and will center on an original plot not based on any of Tom Clancy’s books. A production date hasn’t been set, but they’re hoping to begin shooting sometime next year. Considering Pine’s busy schedule, we think they should figure that out as soon as possible.

Zaillian is no rookie when it comes Jack Ryan’s world. He penned 1994’s Clear and Present Danger, which featured Harrison Ford as the character. There’s also word that he did a major rewrite on Patriot Games, Ford’s first entry into the series after replacing Alec Baldwin from The Hunt for Red October.

What do you think of Zaillian returning to the Jack Ryan franchise? Do you think he can restore it to its former glory?

Sebastian Stan as Bucky 8 30 10 kc Updated: First Look at Sebastian Stan as Bucky in Captain America

Over the past few months we’ve seen our fair share of images from Captain America: The First Avenger. The majority of them featured Chris Evans as the title character and Hayley Atwell as the female lead Peggy Carter, but what about Bucky Barnes? Barnes is Cap’s loyal sidekick and he’s been M.I.A. — until now! A new photo (low quality) has appeared online and it gives us our first look at Sebastian Stan as the character. Check out the photo below…

Here’s the updated HQ photo of Steve Rogers (Evans) and Bucky Barnes (Stan), via The LA Times.

Previous post:

Bucky Barnes 2 1 11 kc Updated: First Look at Sebastian Stan as Bucky in Captain America

We warned you that the picture would be low quality. It’s not the best image but it’s the only one around thus far. We’re sure a HQ version will pop up sooner than later. In any case, from what we can tell, Stan definitely has the Bucky Barnes hair down to a science. We can’t wait to see how he looks stacked against Evans as Steve Rogers. The actors themselves are only two years a part in age but isn’t Bucky supposed to be a lot younger than the Captain?

For those of you who are die hard Captain America fans, is this the Bucky you know and love?

What do you think of Stan as the character?

Last Night to be Released By Tribeca Film and Miramax

last night2 2 11 Last Night to be Released By Tribeca Film and Miramax

Time for another dramatic romance thanks to Tribeca Film and Miramax! They have just officially announced today that they will be teaming up on the U.S. release of Last Night, which they are calling “an intricately layered relationship drama.” Sounds like every relationship story out there, the question is, is it any good? It’s got a cast that can go either way; Keira Knightley, she either puts in an Oscar nominated performances or something middle of the road (if the script isn’t there); Sam Worthington, we’re used to seeing him in action roles so it’ll be interesting to see how he is when he has to just stand and deliver a line; and then there is the always sexy, and often talented Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet, the French actor that no one really knows — but soon will. Sounds like this film can go either way for me! At least now with Tribeca Film and Miramax’s help we’ll all have the chance to judge!

Tribeca Film has acquired theatrical, VOD and select digital rights to the film and plans to release the film in Spring 2011 theatrically in multiple U.S. markets, including New York and Los Angeles, and also via national VOD outlets and on additional platforms. Miramax has retained distribution rights for home video and television sales and long-term digital rights. For a film like this, it’s nice to see them embrazing the VOD and in home markets as well as cinema releases. This seems like a goody to watch on your own sofa with a drink in hand.

Want to know more about the film?

Last Night centers on a married couple apart for an evening when the husband takes a business trip with a colleague to whom he's attracted. While he's resisting temptation, his wife encounters her past love. Starring the Academy Award®-nominated Knightley (Pride & Prejudice), Worthington (Avatar), Mendes (The Other Guys), Canet (Tell No One) and Griffin Dunne (After Hours), the film is written by Massy Tadjedin, who makes her directorial debut with Last Night. Tadjedin is a screenwriter whose credits include The Jacket, which starred Knightley and Adrien Brody. Clint Mansell (Black Swan) is the film's composer, and cinematography is by Peter Deming (Mulholland Dr.).

Here’s all the nice things the pros had to say about one another and the deal…

"Tribeca Film and Last Night are perfectly matched, and we are excited about the opportunity to bring this film to audiences across the country," said Jon Patricof, Chief Operating Officer, Tribeca Enterprises. "In collaboration with Miramax we will offer a range of avenues through which this film can be discovered. Along with our partners at American Express, we look forward to maximizing the potential for this film."

Mike Lang, CEO of Miramax, said, "We are very pleased to partner with Tribeca to bring Last Night to U.S. audiences. We see our deal with Tribeca Film as a strong example of the kind of strategic alliances we are looking to develop. We look forward to expanding the film’s reach to audiences globally as well as maximizing all of Miramax's retained rights, especially on the digital front."

"We are extremely fortunate to have the highly motivated new Miramax and Tribeca Film releasing this beautiful and nuanced film by Massy Tadjedin. The film is an entertaining exploration of boundaries and honesty in a contemporary marriage," said producer Nick Wechsler.

"Last Night is an absorbing and provocative story about relationships, past and present, temptation and fidelity," said Geoffrey Gilmore, Chief Creative Officer of Tribeca Enterprises. "Beautifully realized by director Massy Tadjedin, the film is a fresh and compelling take on the age old issues of love and commitment. It is carried by the exemplary performances of the entire cast, making it a resonant and vastly entertaining experience."

Following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Last Night drew solid from numerous critics.

Is that enough to get you interested?

Angry Birds Code to Appear in Rio Super Bowl Spot

Angry Birds 24 8 10 kc Angry Birds Code to Appear in Rio Super Bowl Spot

Yesterday we got a sneak peek at two TV spots that will appear during Sunday’s Super Bowl presentation. One of them was for Chevy and Transformers Dark of the Moon and the other was for Kung Fu Panda 2. Today we’ve learned that another movie ad will feature something a little more than just pretty colors and fast editing. Are you a fan of the Angry Birds game? If so, you’re in luck because during the commercial for the animated feature Rio, there will be a hidden message embedded in the ad just for you!

According to 20th Century Fox:

This Sunday, Twentieth Century Fox's upcoming animated motion picture event RIO will make Super Bowl commercial history, when the 30-second RIO spot becomes the first-ever to air with an embedded code.

Super Bowl fans in the United States watching RIO's new commercial spot are invited to find the frame with the embedded code that will in turn direct them to a special level on ANGRY BIRDS, Rovio's blockbuster game, which recently entered into a first-of-its kind partnership with RIO. That level will take you to a RIO sweepstakes.

The sweepstakes winner will attend RIO's world premiere in Rio de Janeiro on March 22. That same day, Fox and Rovio launch the highly anticipated "Angry Birds Rio" app. The spot will be available across the web after the Super Bowl.

Did you catch that? Angry Birds is everywhere! Don’t forget that back in August it was announced that a feature film version of the game was in the works. This partnership with Rio could be the first step towards total media domination!

Are you going to participate in the sweepstakes?

Sundance 2011: Morgan Spurlock Interview for The Greatest Movie…

spulock 2 2 11 Sundance 2011: Morgan Spurlock Interview for The Greatest Movie...

Morgan Spurlock, the master of the documentary was back at this years Sundance Film Festival with the ironically titled film The Greatest Movie Ever Sold. The film makes a mockery of itself by selling out, while questioning and showing the process of what “selling out” actually does to a film. This film is in fact the greatest movie ever sold-out because in every, way, shape and form it attempts to sell it’s soul in order to get the film made and show what making a film entails. It even has commercials in the film which though they are sarcastic, are real commercials… so who is the winner? Apparently POM….

Of course the idea starts as a fun romp of Spurlock calling up every brand he can possibly think of and getting rejected. Once Ban signs on, suddenly others follow and we get to see exactly what it takes to get a film made. For us, we see Jeff Bridges sipping a Red Bull, but we learn that what we’re really seeing 15 seconds agreed to by dozens of people, several contracts and specific stipulations, which are sometimes extremely random and all have to be in place in order for no one to get sued.

Spurlock is one of my favorite interviews because the man knows what it takes to get a good interview so therefore he knows how to give one. In many ways he made my job simple and was a pleasure to speak with. Find out what it took Spurlock to make the film in our interview with him below…

Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray Return for TNT’s Dallas Reboot

dallas group shot 2 2 11 kc Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray Return for TNTs Dallas Reboot

The idea of rebooting the primetime soap “Dallas” has been in the pipeline for years. At first it was going to be a film, and then a TV movie, and now they’ve settled on remaking the whole thing as a regular series. In light of the success of “Hawaii Five-O” and the reemergence of “Charlie’s Angels” TNT has decided to sink their teeth into “Dallas.” But unlike the other shows, this one will be a continuance of the original featuring some of the old stars.

Just in case you didn’t know, the feature film adaptation was supposed to include John Travolta, Shirley MacLaine, Luke Wilson, and Jennifer Lopez as some of the original characters. There was even talk of Jessica Simpson and Ashton Kutcher getting in on the action (thank God that didn’t happen!). Every movie attempt failed so they’ve recoiled and decided to target the small screen.

Somehow, TNT has managed to get Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray to return for their revamp as J.R. Ewing, Bobby Ewing, and Sue Ellen Ewing. The rest of the cast will include “Desperate Housewives” co-star Josh Henderson (as J.R.’s son John Ross) and Fast & Furious cast member Jordana Brewster (as a mysterious woman who causes problems between John Ross and Bobby Ewing’s son Christopher, as-yet uncast).

Are you interested in the new Dallas? Should they just leave it alone?
