A couple weeks ago a teaser trailer was released for the upcoming biopic Soul Surfer, and as the title suggests — it’s about surfing. Well, it’s more of a combination of surfing and perseverance over a horrifying ordeal. The film refers to the lead character as played by AnnaSophia Robb, who stars as the real teenager (Bethany Hamilton) who caught America’s attention when the unthinkable happened to her she was while catching a wave. The official trailer for Soul Surfer has been released, check it out and you’ll see exactly what we mean…

In this version of the trailer, they actually show the partial arm. In the teaser, they were hiding it as if they were waiting for a big reveal. We all know what happens to it. The poor girl’s story was all over the news. To get the look, the actress had to wear a green sleeve on her arm, which they edited out later. The CGI isn’t the greatest in the world but it serves its purpose.

The film also stars Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt, Carrie Underwood, Jeremy Sumpter, and Kevin Sorbo. It's scheduled to hit theaters on April 8.

Lucy Lawless 28 1 11 kc Spartacus Star Lucy Lawless To Appear on No Ordinary Family

Did you catch the premiere of “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena” the other week? The prequel was a breakout hit just like its predecessor “Blood & Sand” and it reacquainted us with some familiar faces including Lucy Lawless. The New Zealander has some time off before production on season two begins and she’s spending it moonlighting on another network. According to TVLine, Lawless will appear in a multi-episode arc on ABC’s “No Ordinary Family.”

Sources have exclusively told the site that ABC has tapped Lawless to guest star in at least five episodes of the sci-fi comedy series. The actress will “play a powerful woman and potential adversary for the Powell clan whose agenda could put the family in danger.”Her stint on “Family” is expected to carry on until the end of the season. The network is hoping that she’ll give the show a much needed boost.

Hopefully Lawless’ appearance will also earn the show a second season pick-up. The actress has a hardcore group of fans and we’re a part of them. We’ve followed her from “Hercules,” to “Xena,” to “Tarzan,” to “Battlestar Gallactica,” to “Spartacus,” and now “No Ordinary Family.” We’ll be there with bells on!

Will you tune in to watch Lawless on the show?

charlie sheen two and a half men 1 4 10 kc Two and a Half Men Going on Hiatus While Charlie Sheen Recovers

Over the past year, Charlie Sheen has been dealing with some serious professional and personal issues. Both worlds seem to overlap with each other and now they’ve finally come to ahead. According to several reports, the actor has entered rehab, which will cause his hit TV show “Two and a Half Men” to go on hiatus.

According to Sheen’s publicist Stan Rosenfield, “Charlie Sheen has voluntarily entered an undisclosed rehabilitation center today," the rep said in a statement Friday. "He is most grateful to all who have expressed their concern." Pending his return, production on “Two and a Half Men,” will cease.

CBS also released a statement reacting to Sheen’s decision, offering their support for the actor despite the stalling of the show.

"Due to Charlie Sheen's decision to enter a rehabilitation center, CBS, Warner Bros. Television and executive producer Chuck Lorre are placing Two and a Half Men on production hiatus. We are profoundly concerned for his health and well-being, and support his decision"

This news follows earlier reports that claimed Sheen was being hospitalized for "abdominal pain." We’re not sure how many of you still watch his show but if you do, sorry. Get ready for reruns or a mid-season replacement.

In all seriousness, we hope Sheen finally gets the help he needs.

What do you think of CBS’ decision to shut down Two and a Half Men? Could they have worked around it?

Glee’s Lea Michele to Sing at The Super Bowl

lea michele 28 1 11 kc Glees Lea Michele to Sing at The Super Bowl

We thought Super Bowl Sunday was all about football and you know, the Super Bowl? The coveted date sports fans wait all year for is slowly but surely turning into a night of glee, not the emotion, the TV show “Glee!”  Yesterday we posted some photos from the post-game episode of the series, which will feature lots of football, and a awesome mash-up of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” But it doesn’t stop there, according to Reuters, Lea Michele has been tapped to sing before the big game.

We know what you’re thinking: what will she do? Several days ago we learned that Christina Aguilera had been chosen to sing the National Anthem for the Super Bowl, so Michele’s definitely out for that. Instead, she’ll belt out “America the Beautiful.” The Super Bowl is known to draw an average of over 100 million viewers so we’re hoping that both ladies can handle the pressure.

A couple years ago Aguilera sang the National Anthem at a NBA finals game and it was not her best work. Maybe it was nerves? The Super Bowl airs on Fox, Sunday February 6.

What do you think of Michele performing prior to the big game? What do you think of all the Glee influence on Super Bowl Sunday?

Sundance 2011: Focus Buys Festival Favorite ‘Pariah’

Pariah 28 1 11 kc Sundance 2011: Focus Buys Festival Favorite Pariah

Not only has this been a year of amazing premieres at Sundance 2011, but it’s also been a year for sales. Almost every film that was in the “In Competition” section has been sold — and that’s not to even get started with all the rest. While I was crying my eyes out in Pariah (read Brendan Walsh’s review) and watching the director Dee Rees get yet another standing ovation for her final showing of the film, Focus Features was busy shaking hands with someone because by the time I exited the theater, there was big news…

Focus Features has officially acquired worldwide rights to the contemporary drama Pariah, which has been receiving amazing reviews from critics and is definitely a contender for the audiences pick for best drama of the film.

The film came from first time writer/director Dee Rees and a cast of “unknowns” who’ll you’ll want to start paying attention to. A couple of year ago Dee came to Sundance with her short film for Pariah, was able to catch the attention of investors and receive backing from Spike Lee who signed on as the films executive producer and helped see it through until its world-premiere as an “In Competition” film this past week.

And this won’t be the last time we hear from Dee, in tandem with the Pariah acquisition, Focus has engaged her to write another screenplay for them to release. The script deal “is for a new feature-length film that the writer/director would conceive.” Sounds like a good idea! Get her while she’s hot!

Find out more about the film below:

The feature is an expansion of Ms. Rees' short film of the same name, which screened at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. Ms. Oduye, who had starred in the short film, portrays Alike (pronounced "ah-lee-kay"), a 17-year-old African-American woman who lives with her parents (Kim Wayans and Charles Parnell) and younger sister (Sahra Mallesse) in Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood. Alike is quietly but firmly embracing her identity as a lesbian. With the support of her best friend Laura (Pernell Walker), she is especially eager to find a girlfriend. Wondering how much she can confide in her family, Alike strives to get through adolescence with grace, humor, and tenacity – sometimes succeeding, sometimes not, but always moving forward.

Focus Features CEO James Schamus said, "Dee Rees has made a debut film that celebrates with astonishing artistry the journey of a young woman who simply never gives up on the power of love. We're thrilled to join her on this next step of a remarkable journey."

"We're thrilled to be working with Focus Features. They're such smart marketers and they love movies, so that we knew Focus was the perfect home for Pariah. We are excited for the film to reach the broadest audience possible," said Ms. Rees.

Are you excited to see the film?

geoff stultz 28 1 11 kc Geoff Stults Lands Lead in Foxs Bones Spin Off

Who’s going to take the quirky humor of “Bones” into a new direction next year? Geoff Stults that’s who! The actor has landed the lead role in the series spin-off that Fox is producing. According to TVLine, the “Happy Town” and “7th Heaven” alum beat out a solid group of actors to become the show’s headliner.

The website reports that Stults will appear in the pilot of the show, which will be aired as the 19th episode of “Bones” this season. Watch out for that. The new show is based on The Locator, a two book series written by Richard Greener. The story centers on Walter Sherman aka "the Locator," a former military policeman who can find anything.

It was previously announced that Walter’s partner will be played by Oscar nominee Michael Clarke Duncan. Duncan’s character’s name is Leo, a tough, raw-hide cowboy philosopher. That will be a sight to see. We’re happy to hear that Duncan is getting work that’s worthy of his talent. He’s been slipping in the quality department for the past eight years. It’s time for a change.

What do you think of Stults landing the lead in the Bones spin-off? Will you watch?

Pariah 28 1 11 kc Focus Features Acquires Spike Lee Produced Pariah

Focus Features has just announced their latest purchase from this year’s Sundance Film Festival. It’s called Pariah and it comes from first time writer-director Dee Rees. The film was executive produced by Spike Lee and its a truly unique and telling coming of age story about a teenage African-American woman.

Via the press release:

The feature is an expansion of Ms. Rees' short film of the same name, which screened at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. Ms. Oduye, who had starred in the short film, portrays Alike (pronounced "ah-lee-kay"), a 17-year-old African-American woman who lives with her parents (Kim Wayans and Charles Parnell) and younger sister (Sahra Mallesse) in Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood.

Where has Kim Wayans been hiding? During the nineties she was almost as prominent as her older and younger brothers, and then she disappeared. We’re happy to see her in the spotlight again. It’s also great that Spike Lee took the time to reach out and mentor an up and comer with their first major project. That mentorship is exactly what the Sundance Film Festival is supposed to be about.

Amongst all of the quirky, surprising, comedic, and dramatic films that have debuted at the festival this year, Pariah definitely has a voice and a tone all its own.

What do you think of Focus Features’ purchase of Pariah?

Mia Wasikowska Joins Chan-wook Park’s Stoker

mia wasikowska 28 1 11 kc Mia Wasikowska Joins Chan wook Parks Stoker

Alice in Wonderland star Mia Wasikowska is negotiations to appear in a thriller called Stoker according to Deadline. What makes Stoker so special? The film’s screenplay was written by actor Wentworth Miller aka Michael from “Prison Break” aka Chris from Resident Evil: Afterlife.

Aside from Miller’s involvement Chan-wook Park will direct the film that previously had Carey Mulligan and Jodie Foster set to star. Unfortunately, neither of them are attached at this point. Stoker centers on “an eccentric teen whose enigmatic and estranged uncle returns to the family after the death of the girl's father. Strange things begin to happen.”

This sounds like another tale about creepy uncles. Why do uncles always get the bad end of the stick? Miller also wrote Uncle Charlie, a prequel that explores another chapter in the history of a family with a knack for burying secrets as well as bodies. Someone’s really into this family!

Stoker will be produced by Tony and Ridley Scott. Wasikowska also stars in the period drama Jane Eyre, which is an adaptation of the popular novel. That film is due out later this year.

What do you think of Wasikowska joining Stoker? Is she the right fit?

Nikita: Season 1 Episode 12: Free – TV Review

Nikita Free Maggie Q Nikita: Season 1 Episode 12: Free TV Review

She’s back! After more than a month away “Nikita” has returned from winter hiatus. The show picks up shortly after it left off with Alex becoming an agent, and getting some new digs. Unfortunately, one of the downsides to her new civilian status includes a deadly accessory that could end her life at the push of a button! Check out our review…

The Players:

Episode Title: “Free”

After being promoted to field agent, Division inserts a tracking device into Alex’s cerebral cortex. Nikita realizes that the chip has a kill switch and can give Alex a brain aneurysm at any time. In order to remove the device, she teams up with C.I.A. analyst Ryan (the guy she saved a couple episodes back), to kidnap Birkoff and force him to give her the password to his computer so she can disarm the chip.

The Good:

  • Thad Luckinbill/Nathan: For any soap opera fans out there, Thad Luckinbill’s appearance on the show was a real treat. He and Lyndsy Fonseca both starred on the daytime drama “The Young & the Restless” together 8 years ago and they were part of a young super couple. Their characters names were J.T. and Colleen, and she was a shy high school girl and he was the older more experienced bad boy. It was great to see these two together again. The chemistry is still there just like old times.
  • Birkoff Interrogation: As usual, Birkoff provided the comedic relief this week during his pseudo-interrogation with Ryan. He was the perfect mix of sarcastic and arrogant. His one liners were priceless. I personally liked the part where he called Ryan a mini Ethan Hunt.
  • Ryan Fletcher: Speaking of Ryan, he was a pleasant surprise. When I first heard that he was returning to the show I didn’t understand why. It would make more sense for them to bring back Owen than him, but it looks like he’ll serve a purpose. After Nikita told him about “Alex,” I think he might be the one who blows her cover — inadvertingly of course.

The Bad:

  • Russian Flashbacks: I’m all for backstory but Alex’s flashbacks with her father were just weird. The accents were bad, and I kept expecting Daniel Craig to pop up at any minute because it looked like bootleg scenes from Defiance. And at the end of it all we learn that her family was actually rich and they just like to play “survival” in the woods ever so often? What were her parents up to exactly?

Overall:

This week’s episode of “Nikita” was good but not great. It was just used as a filler to kick-start several new storylines including Ryan and Nathan. Two new guys. Two new conflicts.

Rating: 8/10

“Nikita” airs Thursdays on The CW at 9 PM.

Community: Season 2 Episode 13: Celebrity Pharmacology 212 – TV Review

Posted: 28 Jan 2011 09:13 AM PST

community2.13 piercebeestoilet 01 28 11 Community: Season 2 Episode 13: Celebrity Pharmacology 212 TV Review

Anti-drug messages on TV tend to be “very special episodes” that drastically depart from the show’s style and tone in order to tell kids that “hey, drugs are bad.”  But “Community” rarely plays by the same rules other TV shows do, and although there is an anti-drug message here it never feels “special” thanks in large part to screaming men in clown wigs and inappropriate text messages. Intrigued? Read on to find out the details.

The Players:

Episode Title: "Celebrity Pharmacology"

The study group is putting on an anti-drug performance at Annie’s request, and Pierce (playing the part of drugs) is annoyed because he has no lines. He later finds out that Annie desperately needs money, and writes her a check so he can get a better part…although in typical Pierce fashion, he ends up going crazy with all the power and attention he’s getting. Meanwhile, Jeff sends a sexy text message on Britta’s behalf only for it to go horribly, horribly wrong. Annie has to figure out what to do as Pierce is making drugs look cool, while Jeff desperately tries to resolve his mistake.

The Good:

  • This is Your Chang on Drugs: Once again, Ken Jeong puts together an amazing performance and despite the fact that he has relatively little screen time, he totally steals the show. This time around he’s acting as “drugs gone bad” in the group’s anti-drug production, and he manages to deliver the message perfectly while also being completely insane – and completely hilarious.  His subsequent pummeling by 50 angry kids and his post-trauma confusion only make the punchline (no pun intended) better.
  • Independence Day: But “Community” isn’t only about wacky characters doing goofy things, it’s about exploring its characters’ psychoses. We’re given a fairly straightforward backstory about Annie’s life (which conveniently explains why she lives in such a bad neighborhood) and then she’s forced to choose between being dependent on Pierce or striking out for her own, while simultaneously making the play to tell kids not to depend on drugs.  It’s a credit to the show that it never handles this ham-handedly; we never feel like we’re being preached to, even when a screaming Chinese man literally tells us the point.

The Bad:

  • Let’s Talk About Sext: This week’s sideplot feels like it was taken out of an old Three’s Company episode and updated to include modern technology. Admittedly, Jeff accidentally seducing Britta’s nephew via texting seems like it could be an interesting way to generate comedy, but only if Britta finds out about it.  Instead, the show quietly sweeps the whole thing away before any conflict is raised, and Jeff learns absolutely nothing. Speaking of which, wasn’t he supposed to be learning the zen of niceness from Rich? Guess that didn’t go so well.
  • LOL DILDOS: The insinuation that Annie lives above a sex shop called Dildopolis was a pretty good one-liner gag, especially when it turned out it was actually true, and the idea of waking up in the middle of the night because the sex shop was having a 2 AM sale seems like it has a lot of potential. But instead of finding a funny way to exploit this premise, they just had an announcer talk about dildos for 30 seconds. It’s extra annoying because the post-credits short is usually pretty good by itself, and this one totally failed to deliver.

The Quotable:

  • "Does marijuana make people work faster? I thought it just made them custom-paint their vans and solve mysteries.”
  • “You don’t count, Britta – you don’t respond to anything appropriately.” “Thank you!”
  • “Dean-dong!”
  • “I don’t know who you’re talking about.” “Chang!” “I know who you’re talking about, he doesn’t exist.”
  • “There’s a rapist in the hallway!” “That’s my landlord, and if he wanted you to be raped, you’d be raped.”
  • “What are you doing in an apartment above Dildopolis… and when did they open a second location?”
  • “I found the drapes in a dumpster, can you believe it?” “Ha… yes.”
  • “OK guys, remember: The most important thing is to have fun! The second most important thing is to know all your lines and all your blocking and not mess up at all. Actually, flip those.”
  • “You can’t ignore me forever.  …OK, you probably can.”
  • “What does this symbol mean? It’s like a number 8 and then an = sign and then a >”
  • “He sent her an emoto-penis.”
  • “Well that answers my question; Jeff Winger is sexy even in a coffin.”
  • “We’re independent! We need each other!”
  • “I’m gonna deep fry your dog and eat your momma’s face! And I’m gonna wear your little brother’s skin like pajamas!”

Overall:

Although the side stories were uneven and disappointing, the main plot of this week’s episode was more than engaging enough to keep us watching. The Chang performance is a must-see scene.

Rating: 8/10
