Doesn’t it seem like Jackass 3D came out just yesterday? The film debuted last fall with a whopping $50 million its opening weekend, and it went on to gross over $177 million worldwide. That’s quite a feat considering it only cost $20 million to make. When you take the financial success into consideration and pair it with the vast amount of leftover footage from the film, you realize that another movie wouldn’t be too far behind. The first trailer for Jackass 3.5 has hit the net and it’s a doozy. Check it out…

This latest installment of the highly successful JACKASS franchise will premiere on April 1, 2011 to a worldwide audience through Joost, which will also extend its player on the Jackass Facebook community of over 8 million fans. Available online exclusively at Joost.com in twelve countries – U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, Germany, France, Austria, Luxembourg, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland and Turkey – the digital episodes will bring the outrageous stunts and antics of the JACKASS crew to over 300 million people around the globe. The JACKASS 3.5 first-look trailer is now available on Joost.com in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Australia.

JACKASS 3.5, directed by Jeff Tremaine, will feature over 85 minutes of all-new content, including never-before-seen stunts, outrageous pranks and other side-splitting antics from the legendary pranksters Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Ryan Dynn, Wee Man, Preston Lacy, Dave England and "Danger Ehren" McGhehey. The Rite is a horror-thriller that’s based on actual events that occurred between two priests in Rome. The film is directed by Mikael Håfström and stars Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins, and a young, Irish actor named Colin O’Donoghue. The duo are cast as an unlikely pair: the believer and the doubter, and as viewers we watch them fight a battle of spiritual warfare, while dealing with their own personal demons.

The Plot:

The Rite centers on a priest named Michael Kovak (O’Donoghue) who travels to Rome for exorcism training. He has serious doubts about his faith and his superiors hope that his new tutelage will restore it. He becomes the apprentice to a well-known but highly unconventional priest named Father Lucas Trevant (Hopkins), and through his experiences he learns the ugly truth about Satan, demons, and possession.

The Good:

Colin O’Donoghue: The young actor plays the lead role as the doubting soon-to-be priest Michael Kovak. Initially he comes across as disinteresting and average but he holds his own against a seasoned Anthony Hopkins and Rutger Hauer.
Light Humor: Despite the thriller/horror emphasis, there are several instances of humor in this film. Extreme moments of tension are broken up by the most random statements or incidents. [Spoiler] At one point a cell phone rings during an exorcism and the priest stops to take the call. It’s inappropriate but hilarious.

The So-So:

Pass the Priest: There’s no real motivation behind any of Kovak’s actions prior to the last 20 minutes of the film. He’s not interested in exorcisms but they’re thrust upon him by three different people. It’s literally like watching pass the student. It’s a strange way to progress the plot, and it comes across as lazy writing.
Underused Actors: Hinds, Hauer, and Jones have small supporting parts that each serve one purpose. Once they’ve completed them, they disappear into the background and with the exception of Hauer, we never hear from them again. I understand that actors sign on for cameos or small parts all the time, but with talent like theirs, the writers could have at least made them good.

The Bad:

Alice Braga: Braga’s character is based on the writer of the book from which the film is based. What’s the purpose of changing the sex of the character other than having an attractive woman on screen? She brings nothing new to the role.
The Exorcisms: The movie is PG-13 so the exorcism scenes are nothing to write home about. There are some decent jump scares but they can only go so far because of the rating, therefore don’t look for anything truly horrifying to come out of this.

Overall:

The Rite is a watered down exorcism film that provides a few inappropriate laughs, and some decent scares. Buy a ticket at your own risk.

Rating: 6/10

The Rite opens in theaters on January 28th.

Minka Kelly and Rachael Taylor Join Charlie’s Angels

A couple weeks ago we learned that ABC had plans to reboot “Charlie’s Angels” for their network. They quickly began casting the primary roles, which included “General Hospital” alum Annie Ilonzeh. According to TVLine, they may have found the other two Angels in the form of The Roommate star Minka Kelly and Transformers Rachael Taylor.

Ilonzeh’s character is described as a very smart and very athletic ex-cop and a master of martial arts. She is the most serious of our 3 Angels but also knows how to let her hair down and have a great time. She’ll be joined by Kelly’s character Marisa, who’s a former U.S. Marine, a weapons expert trained in all forms of hand-to-hand combat, and a neat freak.

Taylor will play the youngest of the trio, Abby, the beautiful and privileged daughter of a notorious Wall Street crook. She is also a con artist, as well as a Krav Maga expert.

We like all of the actors hired, but we’ll have to wait until we see photos and footage before we pass any real judgment. Everything is still in the early development stages.

Earlier today we expressed our concern about the growing cast of Garry Marshall’s New Year’s Eve. The romantic comedy is becoming less of an ensemble and more of a free-for-all. This morning it was announced that Josh Duhamel had joined the cast and now THR is reporting that two more have signed on to co-star. Make room for Ice Cube and Ryan Seacrest everybody!

New Year's Eve centers on the intertwining stories of a group of New Yorkers as they navigate their way through bittersweet drama and romance over the course of New Year's Eve. The various romances or non-romances will intersect and weave an overall plot laced with love and loss.

Duhamel’s character is said to be a hopeless romantic who spends the day trying to get to New York in the hope of getting to a party in order to re-meet a mystery girl from the previous year. Cube will star as a police office who works with the director of the Times Square festivities (Hilary Swank), and Seacrest will make a cameo as himself (probably announcing the big event).

We’re not sure how much the budget is for this film but it has to be outlandish. If not, everyone involved must really like Marshall or are working for peanuts. We already had concerns about the film from the beginning and now we’re just terrified of what the final product will look like.

Earlier today we learned that The Hobbit would undergo a slight production delay. Director Peter Jackson had a bit of a health scare and was required to undergo surgery for an ulcer. Even though that rained on our parade, we have something positive to make up for it. According to IFTN, Jackson’s The Lovely Bones star Saoirse Ronan has joined the cast of The Hobbit!

We seriously didn’t see this casting coming. Thus far, many of the stars featured in the original Lord of the Rings trilogy have been announced to reprise their roles including Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, and even Elijah Wood. Ronan’s character is currently unknown but casting director Ros Hubbard said the actress will have a great time during the shoot.

“[W]orking with Peter Jackson is like working with a family,” says Hubbard, “So they'll have a great time. Saoirse's family will go too. Everyone is very close and very loving on those sorts of jobs. It's not like typical studio movies at all.”

Hmm, but what does this all mean? For those of you who are familiar with The Hobbit, who could Ronan play? Perhaps the younger version of a female character from Lord of the Rings?

Official Plot Synopsis:

The casting confirmations for the upcoming James Bond sequel are starting to roll in. A few weeks ago we learned that Daniel Craig would be reprising his title role as the secret agent, and now we’re hearing that his handler and right hand woman M will be back too! According to Mi6, it looks like Judi Dench will return for another round of Bond action.

While at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards, Dench confirmed to the site that she would be reprising her role in the yet to be titled Bond 23. Here’s what she had to say…

“Of course, I’m looking forward hugely to working with Daniel [Craig] again and with Sam [Mendes] who I’ve only ever worked with in the theatre. So that’ll be all good fun to do! I’m so glad it’s coming back, it’s wonderful.”

This will mark Dench’s seventh appearance as M in a Bond film. She made her debut as the character in 1995, alongside then new-comer Pierce Brosnan in Golden Eye. Production on the new Bond is slated to begin later this year with a release date set for November 9, 2012.

Are you familiar with the video game Heavy Rain? It’s available on PlayStation 3 and debuted in early 2010. The game has a story mode that mimics a thriller mixed with a dash of film noir. With that type of tone are you really surprised that Hollywood is gearing up to make a feature adaptation of it? According to Variety, the production company Unique Features has hired “Deadwood” creator David Milch to pen Heavy Rain: The Movie.

Heavy Rain “spans four days of mystery and centers on the hunt for a murderer known as the Origami Killer. Four characters, each following his own leads and with his own motives, take part in a desperate attempt to prevent the killer from claiming a new victim, with each character’s decisions affecting the plans of the other three.”

Producer Bob Shaye is confident that Milch is the perfect person to adapt Heavy Rain for the film medium. “David Milch’s incredible ability to transform intense and complex storylines into gripping, popular drama makes him the perfect partner for us to have on ‘Heavy Rain,’ ” Shaye said.

Oscar Nominees To Rule The Box Office Weekend

This weekend Oscar nominated films, The King’s Speech, True Grit, and Black Swan will battle with last week’s box office winner, No Strings Attached, while new releases, The Rite and The Mechanic try to sneak their way into the top five….

And now for our box office predictions…

#1 The Rite

There was a time when Anthony Hopkins was a box office draw, and this month the actor is headlining the obligatory mid-winter horror/thriller. No matter how dull or unimpressive it might seem, the buzz for The Rite has increased over the past few days and it should be able to land at the #1 spot this weekend.

Our Prediction: $14-16M Opening Weekend Box Office.
