Tomorrow morning, the moment we’ve all been waiting for will finally arrive. The 2011 Academy Award nominations will be revealed on Tuesday at 5:30 am PST/8:30 EST. But before we get to that, the folks at the Academy decided to release some promo pics for their talented (and slightly controversial) hosts for this year’s show: James Franco and Anne Hathaway. Check out the duo in the photos below…

The first thing we want to say is, thank God, Franco got rid of that mustache he was wearing these past few months. It was giving off a serial killer vibe that we weren’t comfortable with. Besides that, both him and Anne look great in these photos. We don’t necessarily think that they’re the best fit to host the Oscars, but we’ll see what happens.

What do you think of the new promo shots? Do you think they’ll be a hit or miss at this year’s ceremony?

New Year’s Eve Casts Jon Bon Jovi, Seth Meyers, Til Schweifger

Jon Bon Jovi 24 1 11 kc New Years Eve Casts Jon Bon Jovi, Seth Meyers, Til Schweifger

Garry Marshall’s Valentine’s Day follow up New Year’s Eve is seriously starting to scare us. The cast is growing at an alarming rate, and just when we thought it was done three more actors sign on! According to THR, Jon Bon Jovi (yes, he acts too), Seth Meyers (“Saturday Night Live“), and Til Schweifger (Inglourious Bastards) are all on board.

The trade reports that Bon Jovi’s character will be linked to Halle Berry’s love-lorned alter ego. He’ll play (you guessed it) a rock star who once dumped Berry's caterer character but now finds himself face to face with again at a party.

Meyer will be hooked up with Jessica Biel who’ll play his wife in the comedy. His character wants her to deliver the first baby of the year in order to win a $25,000 reward and finds himself in a heated competition. Schweiger just recently closed his deal so we’re not exactly sure who he’ll play in the movie.

We’re actually looking forward to Bon Jovi in this movie. He’s probably the only person we’re interested in. He’s not a bad actor. Do you remember his stint on “Ally McBeal?” What about his hosting gig on SNL? He’s got chops!

What do you think of the growing cast for New Year’s Eve? Who’s next on the casting list?

The title There Be Dragons makes you think of two things: There Will Be Blood and incorrect grammar. OK, maybe we’re being a little harsh but there’s something missing that makes us wonder what it means. There Be Dragons is a feature film directed by two-time Academy Award winner Roland Joffe and stars Dougray Scott, Wes Bentley, and Derek Jacobi. Check out the theatrical poster and trailer below and hopefully you can find some answers…

Official Synopsis:

THERE BE DRAGONS tells the story of London-based investigative journalist Robert Torres (Dougray Scott), who visits Spain to research a book about Josemaría Escrivá (Cox), the controversial founder of Opus Dei. But Robert hits a wall, both professionally and personally, when his most promising source—his own father, Manolo Torres (Bentley), turns out to be his least cooperative one. Robert begins to unearth his father's toxic secrets when he learns that Manolo was not only born in the same Spanish town as Josemaría, but that they were childhood friends and attended the same seminary.

The two men take radically different paths in life, with Josemaría dedicating his life to his faith while Manolo is swept into the brutal and tumultuous Spanish Civil War.  Manolo descends into a dangerous and jealous obsession when the beautiful Hungarian revolutionary Ildiko (Olga Kurylenko) doesn't return his affections and instead gives herself to the courageous military leader, Oriol (Rodrigo Santoro).

Warner Bros has just released a set of five posters that highlight the kick-ass characters in Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch. The female driven action flick is led by a group of up and comers as well as some veterans and you’ve never seen them like this before. Check out the character posters below…

Out of this group, our favorite poster is of Babydoll. She has a gun and a sword so she can take you out with either one. If you want to die quick, she can hit you with a bullet, but if you’re itching for visceral pain, the blade can deliver. She has variety and we like that!

Set in the 1950s, Sucker Punch follows Babydoll (Emily Browning) who is confined to a mental institution by her stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While there, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain, and in that world, she begins planning her escape, needing to steal five objects to help get her out before she is deflowered by a vile man. This trailer gives us a better idea of what those five things are.

Sucker Punch is scheduled to hit theaters on March 25, 2011.

the matrix 24 1 11 kc Updated: Keanu Reeves Says More Matrix Sequels Could in the Future?

***Update: This news has been reported as false. According to The Playlist, Reeves reps have denied the following statements by the actor. Therefore, we can chalk this one up to being another hoax.***

Over the past few years, we’ve seen our fair share of unexpected sequels. Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, Live Free or Die Hard, and Rocky Balboa are just a few films that have gone where other franchises wouldn’t dare go. They all went past the trilogy mark, and now we’re hearing reports that another popular film series could follow in their footsteps. Are you interested in seeing The Matrix Part 4 and 5?

Over at AICN, they received some important news from a reader called “El Nino” regarding a key note speech Keanu Reeves gave at The London School of Performing Arts. It was there that he dropped the bomb that The Wachowskis already have the layout for a fourth and fifth film in The Matrix series. Here’s what a portion of the email revealed:

Says he met the Wachowskis… for lunch over Christmas, and stated that they had completed work on a two-picture script treatments that would see him return to the world of the matrix as Neo. Says the Wachowskis have met with Jim Cameron to discuss the pro’s and con’s of 3D and are looking to deliver something which has never been seen again. Keanu stated that he still has an obligation to the fans to deliver a movie worthy of the title “The Matrix” and he swears this time that the treatment will truly revolutionize the action genre like the first movie. Wachowskis are working on a movie called “Cloud Atlas” at the moment, once that concludes they will talk again.

To be honest, we don’t need more from The Matrix. Revolutions was God-awful and Reloaded was all show and no pay off…literally. Do you remember the ending to that film? Let it go people.

Do you want to see more from The Matrix?

The Future Miranda July Sundance 2011: The Future Movie Review

Do you like awkward people being in love?  Do you find profound meaning in the tiniest of objects, everywhere you go?  Is every emotion you feel blown waaaaay out of proportion?  Then you’re probably a fan of Me and You and Everyone We Know director Miranda July!  Her entry to this year’s Sundance Film Festival is titled The Future, and though it’s hardly a departure from the rest of her canon of work, she has confirmed her established style, and is on her way to becoming the kind of indie auteur who will surely become a permanent fixture at Sundance.  To find out why, check out the rest of the review after the jump…

The Players:

  • Writer/Director- Miranda July
  • Starring- Miranda July, Hamish Linklater, David Warshofsky, Joe Putterlik
  • Music – Jon Brion

The Plot:

After saving a wounded cat and deciding to adopt it, thirty-something couple Sophie and Jason (July & Linklater) realize that this decision marks a new stage in their relationships and lives.  While discussing how this new responsibility will affect their lives, they realize that in their mid thirties, neither of them are satisfied with their accomplishments, and decide to use the month it will take the feline to convalesce in the shelter to enact some positive in their own lives.  While pursuing their individual goals, they each encounter people who change the two lovers’ attitudes towards each other in different, challenging ways.

The Good:

  • Pacing – There are a lot of rhythmic elements in this film, and July’s sense of timing makes her brand of awkward comedy more pensive than uncomfortable.  This deliberate sense of timing is conveyed in the film’s music, editing, and most importantly, its dialogue.  Each character speaks with a different cadence.  The best example of this is from the late, non-actor Joe Putterlik. The elderly man speaks as if there is no punctuation in his lines.   This, combined with the softness of his voice adds a tenderness that relieves some of the uncomfortable awkwardness of the scenes which involve him.  It is a style that is unique, and practically trademarked to Miranda July.
  • Music – The film is scored by indie producer/rock star/composer Jon Brion, who’s definitive score is in P.T. Anderson’s Punch Drunk Love, brings a similar minimalist sensibility to this project.  Soft keys mixed with digital tones highlight the especially emotional moments of the film, without showcasing themselves overtly.

The Bad:

  • Waaah! – Miranda July makes such an enormous deal of each character’s every emotion, almost all of which are based on anxiety and fear.  It’s like a Death Cab For Cutie record and a Sylvia Plath book had a baby.  Being romantic and idealistic is one thing, but when it dominates a film to the point where it’s almost crippled by these big feelings, it wears on the viewer very quickly.
  • Voice – There is a singular voice for all of the characters in this film: July’s.  Although they are all on separate paths and journeys, they all seem to be cut from the same cloth, and the emotional tone stays the same throughout the movie.  There is no growth or conclusive arch for any individual character, and it seems that the film is more focused on the journey than the destination, which works well for life, but can end up muddled when used in film.

Overall:

This is a film that is crafted by an artist with a distinct and consistent style, however that style does not necessarily resonate with all audiences.  It’s similar to the way that one needs to be in a certain mood to listen to certain kinds of music.  Sometimes putting on a Radiohead album is just too much of a bummer, and inappropriate for a particular moment.  But for fans of July’s previous work, and those who feel or seek out big emotions, then this will be a fascinating, if not always entertaining, exploration of relationships in the twilight of youth.

Sundance 2011: Shorts Program III Review – Drama in Under 30 Minutes

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 01:40 PM PST

marcel 3 blogLarge3 Sundance 2011: Shorts Program III Review Drama in Under 30 Minutes

In sharp contrast to the Shorts Program I, which was mainly comedy, the majority of Shorts Program III takes a more serious and dramatic turn with films about a search and rescue for children buried alive and a young man fighting the urge to commit a murder. The two comedies in the group were Love Birds, and then my favorite by far: the 4 minute clay animation, Marcel the Shell with Shoes on.  Does drama mix well with short film?

Read on for the reviews.

The eight short films included in the program are:

  • After You Left, Jef Taylor
  • Love Birds, Brian Lye
  • Crazy Beats Strong Every Time, Moon Molson
  • Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, Dean Fleischer-Camp and Jenny Slate
  • Little Brother, Callum Cooper
  • Forever’s Gonna Start Tonight, Eliza Hittman
  • Stopover, Ioana Uricaru
  • Shikasha, Isamu Hirabayashi

after you left 1 25 11 ckk Sundance 2011: Shorts Program III Review Drama in Under 30 Minutes

After You Left is an honest and rather realistic depiction of what it’s like to be in love with someone and get dumped in Brooklyn. One of the things this film does really well is show how your entire life can be completely overturned when you go from being in a serious relationship to being single. He no longer knows how to interact with their friends, who don’t seem comfortable around him. This film is a little too emo for me, but it has its moments.

Love Birds was a little weird. It tells the love story of a pair of birds (naked humans with feathers on them, living in a giant nest outside). The comedy is in how similar their courtship, interaction, and problems are to the human experience. It’s very silly and I wasn’t sure if I liked it very much at first, but it has a great ending that totally redeems it.

Crazy Beats Strong Every Time deals with issues of masculinity, morality, peer pressure, and patricide. A young man refuses to let his drunk ex-stepfather be left in an apartment hallway and, though he has no idea where he lives. In trying to do the right thing, while at the same time conforming to the attitude of his group of friends, the hero finds his anger toward his ex-stepfather growing to the point of homicidal, then suicidal thoughts.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes on has been available on Youtube since October 2010. It’s a brief conversation with a tiny, anthropomorphized shell about his life. The voice work is inspired and the writing is witty and perfectly timed. I’m excited to see it get to Sundance because it deserves this kind of recognition from the film industry. I certainly want to see more of Fleischer-Camp and Slate’s creations take to the screen.

Little Brother got jipped. Our screening had some technical difficulties with the sound, so it played all the way through in silence. It was also very confusing because, as far as I could tell, it was about a deaf teenager who takes care of his disabled brother. The opening scene shows him turning off (or on) his hearing aid, so for the first 5 minutes, I thought it was meant to be a silent film.  It’s a shame; I will try to see it another time and write a proper review.

Forever’s Gonna Start Tonight is a film that follows a Russian teenage girl on a night of clubbing with her friend. At the heart of it, the film is about a young woman learning that there are different forms of responsibility and coming to understand that there are things she must do that come before what she wants to do.  This film didn’t do much for me because it felt flat. The acting was good, but I didn’t identify as much as I think I might have with the girl’s journey.

Stopover fell a little short as a story about trust and the kindness of strangers. A woman has her wallet stolen while en route to America from Europe. She doesn’t want to involve the police for some reason and is in a state of utter desperation when a man overhears her talking Romanian to her husband. He asks her if he can help her and she explains the situation; he disappears for a while, then returns her wallet. I think the only problem with this film was that the point it was making was too weak.

Shikasha is not a horror film, but rather seems like the a still-life epilogue to a horror film. Two children are buried alive in Japan. The rescue crew digs numerous holes looking for them. Though you’d think there would be an intense sense of urgency, instead there is more of a somber and slow pace to the film, suggesting that none of the rescuers expect to find the children alive. This film, though it has very little plot, has some truly beautiful shots and does a good job of creating a dark and saddening ambiance.

Overall:

Call me narrow-minded, but I like my short films two ways: scary or funny (preferably both!). I have a hard time going through the emotional cycle of a properly done drama in less than an hour. By the time my mood is adjusted for the film, it’s over and I haven’t finished my mental process. It’s hard for me to get invested in characters and their journeys in a short amount of time. So although many of these films were very well made, well written, and well acted in, I didn’t enjoy them nearly as much as the comedies.

James Cameron Says Avatar 2 and 3 Will Be Shot Simultaneously

AvatarNYFCOALP12 13 091 James Cameron Says Avatar 2 and 3 Will Be Shot Simultaneously

Are you anxiously awaiting news about the next installments in James Cameron’s Avatar trilogy? Well, you’re in luck because the Oscar winning director recently opened about about his plans for the projects. It’s no secret that the movies will take a lot of time and effort to complete, therefore Cameron plans on shooting them not back to back — but simultaneously.

According to Cameron:

"I am in the process of writing the next two Avatar films now. We are planning to shoot them together and post them together, and we will probably release them not quite back to back, but about a year apart. Christmas '14 and '15 is the current plan."

He went on to say that we can expect to see plenty of familiar faces in the sequel. "Basically, if you survived the first film, you get to be in the second film, at least in some form." That sounds great to us, but the real question is who will survive to Avatar 3? Dun! Dun! Dun! As you might suspect, he wouldn’t release that info.

Being that the first Avatar became the highest grossing film of all time, the next two have a good chance of becoming huge successes. Therefore, the director and the studio will put some of their future grosses to good use.

"One thing's for sure: some percentage of the presumably-massive Avatar sequel gross will go to charity. Fox has partnered with me to donate a chunk of the profits to environmental causes that are at the heart of the Avatar world. I didn't want to make more Avatar movies without a grander plan in place."

We knew Cameron would find a way to support the environment. You have to give him props for practicing what he preaches.

What do you think of Avatar 2 and 3 being shot together? Who do you think will make it to the end of the trilogy?

The Eagle The Interrogation 17 1 11 kc Channing Tatum in The Eagle Featurette

Are you excited to see Channing Tatum do his best period piece acting? No? OK, maybe you need a little help getting warmed up for his latest film The Eagle. It’s directed by Kevin McDonald, and stars Tatum, Jamie Bell, and the great Donald Sutherland. A new behind the scenes featurette has been released, that shows the actors and the director in their element. Check it out…

Doesn’t this film look like a combination of Apocalypto and Centurion? We keep expecting for Michael Fassbender to pop up at some point. And is it just us, or is Mark Strong in everything? We can’t blame him for getting jobs. Get that work Mr. Strong!

The Eagle is set in the dangerous world of second-century Britain. In 140 AD, twenty years after the unexplained disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, young centurion Marcus Aquila (Tatum) arrives from Rome to solve the mystery and restore the reputation of his father, the commander of the Ninth. Amongst all the drama, he meets and is accompanied by a British slave named Esca, who will be played by Bell, while Sutherland will come into the picture as Marcus' uncle Aquila, who has retired in Britain.

The Eagle opens in theaters on February 11, 2011.

beastie2011 Sundance 2011: Beastie Boys Fight for Your Right Revisited Review

Adam Yauch’s Fight for Your Right Revisited, featuring Elijah Wood, Danny McBride, Seth Rogen, Jack BlackWill Ferrell, and John C. Riley delivers big time. Just imagine every actor you can think of packed into a hilarious 30 minute music video. This is Hollywood the way I like to see it, poking fun at itself and reminding everyone that the very best actors are not only able to make you laugh, but they’re able to laugh at themselves.

The Players:

Review:

This short takes place the morning after the  party featured in the Beastie Boys original music video, Fight for Your Right in 1986 (watch it here). The film comes complete with cameos from a cast I couldn’t believe, including Susan Sarandon, Jason Schwartzman, Rainn Wilson, and Stanley Tucci, to name just a few. It’s almost as if Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood, and Will Ferrell just walked through the studio lot and grabbed any actors they happened to come across, and they came across a few, including Steve Buscemi and Kirsten Dunst. The film has the feel and tone of a long SNL music video skit that you never want to end, even after a metaphorical pissing contest turns into a literal pissing contest and Chloë Sevigny stabs someone.

This film accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do, and that is show amazing actors really playing with an idea and having fun with each other. The Beastie Boys have come a long way since 1986, and I think this parody is their way of saying they know how absurd and ridiculous they were back then and are inviting everyone to join them in laughing at it. Even if you aren’t a huge Beastie Boys fan, this is still going to make you laugh.

Overall:
