Sundance1 18 11 Off To Sundance We Go!!!!

Hi ho! Hi ho! It’s off to freezing-weather-with-hopefully-awesome-films we go!We have our East Coast correspondent Christie Ko, our on the ground, traveling reporter Brendan Walsh and myself returning for yet another year at the Sundance Film Festival starting tomorrow and staying for the whole festival! Brendan has already posted his much watch list and it’s obvious that the two of us will be competing for a few of the films this year. We’ll both be battling it out alongside all the other journalist who aren’t invited to see Red State to get in, though something tells me that if anyone can, it’ll be Brendan despite whatever feminine-charms I might have.

I thought I was the only one seeking out good Ben Foster films (had to specify with The Mechanic working it’s way into theaters) but apparently, I’m not his only fan! Who would have thought! I am the only one out of our group who will definitely be hitting up Ewan McGregor’s film The Details because frankly, there’s almost nothing I can’t watch him in and it’s nice to see him back at the festival.

Apparently documentary filmmakers have stopped trying to make sense of politics and have left it to the fictional filmmakers. In an odd swap, Kevin Spacey will be tackling the political front in his fictional film, Margin Call (hopefully on par or better than Casino Jack did) and well-known documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock will be taking on Hollywood. Politics are basically fictional, and no one likes to take their time and take a look at the truth in Hollywood so I say the swap is a good thing! I’m looking forward to seeing Kevin Spacey get political and Morgan Spurlock make the first doc-buster ever!

Paul Giamatti (isn’t he amazing?), the indie darling (self-professed in an interview I’ll have up with him soon) will be returning to the festival with his latest film, Win Win. Frankly when Giamatti is on screen it’s always a win, win… count me in!

Then there’s a bit of light-hearted fun with My Idiot Brother starring Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks and my favorites Emily Mortimer and Steve Coogan, as well as The Details which stars
Tobey Maguire and once again Elizabeth Bank, in the film with the best synopsis ever….

…Enter the raccoons, who repeatedly tear up his grass. When Jeff tries to eradicate these meddlesome vandals, his efforts initiate a bewildering chain reaction involving a crazy cat lady, multiple infidelities, extortion, organ donation, and somebody on the wrong end of a bow and arrow.

It definitely seems like Sundance has lightened up a bit this year and is going for more comedies and thrillers than in previous years. Though (not on my list) is Meek’s Cutoff will be there for those of you who like watching people walk around for a while.

And of course I need myself a little horror and blood (though Brendan will be taking Hobo with a Shotgun because of how graphic we hear that bad boy is) I’ll be taking, Oregionian starring Lindsay Pulsipher, who acted in one of my films and is absolutely amazing.

Of course we’ll have our ears open for other great films that surprise everyone and we’ll have a lot more reviews than the following, but check out the list of films you can expect to see reviews from below…

Steve Zaillian to Rewrite TimeCrimes for DreamWorks

Posted: 18 Jan 2011 05:07 PM PST

timecrimes 18 11 1 kc Steve Zaillian to Rewrite TimeCrimes for DreamWorks

Do you remember the Spanish sci-fi thriller TimeCrimes? A few years ago it blew into the Sundance Film Festival and made quite the impression on the viewing audience. As you already know, Hollywood can’t let a good thing go untarnished so DreamWorks has decided to produce an American version of the film, and according to Deadline they’ve already hired a writer.

Steve Zaillian has been commissioned by DreamWorks to rewrite the script for TimeCrimes, which had several early drafts done by Tim Sexton. The film’s story centers on a man who repeatedly goes back in time an hour in an attempt to alter the events of a crime. This will be another high profile project for Zaillian who just came off of adapting Stieg Larsson’s novel The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for David Fincher. He’s also expected to pen the follow up The Girl Who Played With Fire.

As if those projects weren’t enough, Zaillian has his hands full with Bennett Miller’s upcoming film, Moneyball and Martin Scorsese’s crime drama The Irishman. He’s a busy, busy man.

What do you think of Zaillian rewriting TimeCrimes? Have you seen the original?

Sundance 2011 Preview: What are we excited for?

Fight For Your Right Revisited e1295399196148 Sundance 2011 Preview: What are we excited for?

The Sundance Film Festival kicks off this Thursday in Park City, Utah!  We here at ScreenCrave are sending a band of intrepid reporters and cinephiles to bring you the news, reviews, hype, and stories from the independent film world’s premier event!  With a record number of submissions, and a festival lineup jam packed with the most promising and challenging features, shorts, and documentaries, how is one supposed to know what to be excited for?  Well, don’t worry your pretty little head, because we’re here for you.  Check out some of the films ScreenCrave is excited for, after the jump…

RED STATE – Kevin Smith returns to the festival that made him household name among indie film lovers almost twenty years ago.  His new movie, Red State, is a horror film about what happens when a radical religious group (a la the reprehensible Westboro Baptist Church) takes their beliefs to a whole new, deadly level.

Kevin Smith makes his best films when he takes risks (remember how Clerks was funded by credit card debt?), and this looks like his biggest risk in a while.  He’s stepping out of his comfort zone of buddy comedies and making a real genre film which requires a consistent tone, and calculated direction to maintain suspense.  He’s stacked the cast with real actors (John Goodman, Melissa Leo, Michael Parks, Stephen Root) instead of just buddies who make him laugh.  He’s finally taken the camera off the tripod!  Come on, people!  The guy who’s been making his bread & butter from dick jokes looks like he might have finally grown up a little!  How will this new found maturity affect those of us who have relied on him our whole lives for a specific type of movie?  Well, there’s only one way to find out…

CEDAR RAPIDS - Miguel Arteta’s comedy about insurance salesmen gone wild in the midwest stars Ed Helms, John C. Reilly, and The Wire’s Isaiah Whitlock Jr.  When this group of salesmen arrives in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for a big industry conference, they lose themselves in a world that is much bigger than the one they come from.  Think of it as The Hangover, for older, more boring guys.

That may not sound like the most exciting thing, but the film’s cast is what really sells this film.  Ed Helms helms (get it?) this cast of phenomenal character actors, all of whom really bring humanity to their comedy.  None of these guys are the types you would expect to see holding up a movie on their own, but combined, they have the makings of a great chemistry driven comedy.  Also, I’m always thrilled to see the supporting cast of The Wire break out into other good works.  Sheeeeeeeeiiiiiit.

TROLL HUNTER - A group of Norweigan film students set out to capture the mythical beasts of Scandanavia on camera with the help of a grizzly…well…Troll Hunter.  The trailer for this film is exciting, funny, and seems to offer the things that were lacking in The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield; That is to say, a good look at the monsters in question.

Judging by the trailer, it looks like this could be the kind of movie that has several different filmmaking styles in one, similar to the way District 9 begins as a documentary, seamlessly morphs into a horror film, and by the end becomes an action/adventure epic.  Here’s hoping this film can live up to what it claims to be.

FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT REVISITED - The Beastie Boys are back!  With Ad-Rock’s recent clean bill of health in his fight against cancer, the B-Boys are going back to revisit the epic party from 1987, only now we get to see the morning after.  It looks like the boys brought along all the fun people you could fit into one party themed short film:  Seth Rogen, Will Ferrell, Susan Sarandon, Elijah Wood, Danny McBride, Rashida Jones, Steve Buscemi, Jack Black, and a whole slew of others!  This could very well be the most fun film playing at the festival.

BEING ELMO - If you were a child in the last 40 years, odds are you grew up watching Sesame StreetBeing Elmo documents the performer behind the show’s most popular character: Elmo!  The documentary explores his past, as well as his current life as one of the most popular characters on television who still gets to maintain a sense of anonymity while functioning in the real world.

The Muppets are a fascinating cultural phenomenon, and in spite of how educational they’ve proven to be over the years, it seems that everyone always wants to learn more about the muppets themselves.  The process of creating and animating these puppets is always a fascinating one, and with Jason Segel’s forthcoming The Muppets, this seems like the perfect film to whet our appetites and interests in those lovable clumps of felt.

HERE – Braeden King’s feature about a map maker’s unlikely romance while surveying Armenia stars Ben Foster and Lubna Azabal.  The main draw for this film is its star, Ben Foster.  One of the best young actors working today, Foster has an intensity and depth that is often frightening (only sometimes because of his villainous roles).  However, the chance to see him bring his unique sensitivity to a romance story will hopefully show us a whole new set of skills.

Another fascinating aspect of this movie is its development through the Sundance Institute, over the course of several years.  Some may think that films in the Sundance Festival carries an air of nepotism, but the craftsmanship which comes through in the films which do so is undeniable.  After all, we wouldn’t have P.T. Anderson’s Hard Eight (and perhaps his subsequent films), if it hadn’t been for the Sundance Institute’s development of his short film, Sidney. Here will be competing in the U.S. Drama category of the festival.

HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN – This one is a little conflicting.  Torture porn, and violence for its own sake really isn’t something that should be celebrated (I’m looking at you, A Serbian Film).  Luckily, I don’t get a strong sense that this film is either.  Hobo with a Shotgun, based on a fake trailer created for Tarantino & Rodriguez’ Grindhouse, features such stylized violence which, graphic as it may be, seems almost tongue in cheek, and the film’s title card suggests a throwback to the kind of grindhouse exploitation films in which such violence was commonplace.  It looks like a mix between Mad Max and Garth Ennis’ The Punisher, in which the realistic violence is also somehow completely implausible and thus, appropriately entertaining. The final word on this movie will be based almost entirely on how seriously it takes itself.  Rutger Hauer sure seems to be…
And that’s not all!  But there are too many good looking films to go into detail on, so in no particular order, here are some other films we at screencrave are excited for:  Knuckle, Miss Representation, Project Nim, Perfect Sense, The Oregonian, Troubadours, The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, Margin Call, and The Redemption of General Butt Naked.

Rubber Trailer 18 1 11 kc Rubber Movie Trailer Let it Roll!

It’s a tire. It’s rubber. It’s crazy! There’s a psycho car tire on the loose in the trailer for Rubber, a film by Quentin Dupieux. Over on Apple, they’ve released the video that features the tale of an inanimate object as it goes on the run from authorities. It’s a comedy that’s definitely different from anything else we’ve seen in theaters. The title character doesn’t walk, talk, or even have a face. It just rolls. Check out the trailer…

So to make a long story short, the tire has telekinetic abilities that allow it to make people’s heads explode. It’s sick and twisted, but hilarious! We also love the cop meeting regarding their perp, where the leader said, “it looks like this” and he pointed to a random tire.

Official Synopsis:

RUBBER is the story of Robert, an inanimate tire that has been abandoned in the desert, and suddenly and inexplicably comes to life. As Robert roams the bleak landscape, he discovers that he possesses terrifying telepathic powers that give him the ability to destroy anything he wishes without having to move. At first content to prey on small desert creatures and various discarded objects, his attention soon turns to humans, especially a beautiful and mysterious woman who crosses his path. Leaving a swath of destruction across the desert landscape, Robert becomes a chaotic force to be reckoned with, and truly a movie villain for the ages. Directed by legendary electro musician Quentin Dupieux (Steak, Nonfilm), aka Mr. Oizo, RUBBER is a smart, funny and wholly original tribute to the cinematic concept of no reason.

Rubber opens in theaters on April 1, 2011.

According to the site, Lucas has been cast as the famous aviator, Charles Lindbergh. He was the father to Charles Lindbergh Jr. who was unfortunately kidnapped and murdered in 1932. The case was one of the biggest that the Bureau of Investigation had to tackle while under the supervision of Hoover.

J. Edgar will cover the head of the FBI and his reign from its creation in 1935 to his death in 1972. The film will be produced by Brian Grazer and has a script written by Oscar winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (Milk). Production is expected to begin sometime early this year.

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are at it again as the latest incarnations of Sherlock Holmes and his partner John Watson. The duo will reprise their roles for the sequel to the 2009 box office smash and will be joined by a few new faces including Scandinavian actress Noomi Rapace. Entertainment Tonight recently had an opportunity to hang out on the high octane film set, and they’ve posted some risque footage from their visit. Take a look…

Robert Downey Jr. in drag? We’re there! That man could dress up in a bear costume and we’d still be fans. How is it that the lipstick looks slightly appropriate on him?

The cast of Sherlock Holmes 2 also includes Jared Harris, Eddie Marsan, Stephen Fry and Gilles Lellouche. Harris has been named as the villain Moriarty, while Fry will play Holmes' older brother, and Rapace will star as the female lead. The film will once again be directed by Guy Ritchie and is scheduled to hit theaters on December 16, 2011.

After waiting for almost a year, 20th Century Fox has unveiled the first photo from X-Men: First Class. It features the main cast members including Professor Xavier, Magneto, Emma Frost, and Mystique. At first glance, it looks fan made due to the bad Photoshop, but it’s the real deal. It premiered over on MSN via The Daily Blam, but it looks — underwhelming. Check it out…

X Men First Class Cast 18 1 11 kc First Look: X Men First Class Cast Photo

This can’t be the final product. We doubt that Fox would release such a juvenile image to represent one of their biggest tentpoles. It looks like they cut and pasted Rebecca Romijn’s face from the original X-Men trilogy and put it on Jennifer Lawrence’s body. There are a lot of things that can be picked at here, but we’re hoping that a better quality photo will debut shortly after this.

Official Plot Synopsis:

X-Men: First Class charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men.

X-Men First Class will open in theaters nationwide on June 3, 2011.

Spartacus Creator Opens Up About Liam McIntyre, Andy Whitfield, Blood and Sand Season 2

Spartacus Blood and Sand 4 10 10 kc Spartacus Creator Opens Up About Liam McIntyre, Andy Whitfield, Blood and Sand Season 2

Earlier today, we got the opportunity to talk to Steven S. DeKnight, the creator, writer, and executive producer of the Starz hit, “Spartacus: Blood & Sand.” DeKnight is currently promoting the upcoming prequel series  “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena,” which airs on Friday January 21. Just yesterday it was announced that Australian actor Liam McIntyre would replace Andy Whitfield in the title role of “Blood & Sand” when it returns for season two. DeKnight revealed why McIntyre was chosen for the part, and what we can expect from the character in the future.

On Whitfield’s departure, McIntyre’s arrival, and the future of Spartacus:

“We’re obviously deeply saddened that Andy couldn’t continue with us, he was a huge part of the show’s success and we wish him the best and a speedy recovery. We did an exhaustive search to find someone not to replace Andy but to step into the role of Spartacus and we feel very fortunate that we were able to find Liam who we felt really embodied everything we were looking for in the character moving forward.”

With the personal battle that Whitfield is facing [he's currently battling cancer], his former co-stars still stand behind him. Manu Bennett who plays Crixus on the show stated, “We’re all praying for him. We are all in huge support of Andy. We are all so deeply saddened.”

As for “Gods of the Arena” we’ve noticed that the promos never specify how early the events take place. DeKnight clarified it a bit, but also revealed that they’ve been purposely vague with the timeline.

“We never actually specify an exact time during the show. I’ve seen some things that say it’s five years before. It’s vaguely in that area. We were very careful to actually not say how long ago it was. But you could infer from things that have happened that it’s probably in the neighborhood of five years.”

As for the connection between the prequel and “Blood & Sand.” DeKnight says that there will be a direct correlation between the two.

“Absolutely! I never wanted to do just a prequel. I wanted it to inform season one and to really enrich season two. It is very much the connective tissue between both seasons.”

Even though he wouldn’t reveal major spoilers, the creator exclaimed that season two of “Blood & Sand” will be “extra sweet, and “a hell of a ride.”

The show is expected to begin production this spring.

Are you going to watch Gods of the Arena this Friday? Are you excited for season two and the new Spartacus?

Johnny Depp Talks The Lone Ranger

lone ranger logo 18 1 11 kc Johnny Depp Talks The Lone Ranger

Over the year, we can expect to see Johnny Depp in two highly anticipated films, Rango and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, but there’s more where that came from. Depp will also appear in Disney’s big screen adaptation of The Lone Ranger, which they’re simply calling Lone Ranger, as Tonto. The actor recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about his character and the changes they’ve made to flesh him out.

Regarding the script, Depp says, “What we’ve got so far screenplay-wise is really great, really funny.” He has faith in the production and believes that they can achieve something amazing once they get the film on its feet. One of the biggest concerns the actor had about Tonto, was how he would be written. He doesn’t want to reinforce the stereotypes that have been portrayed throughout the years when it comes to Native Americans.

“I always felt Native Americans were badly portrayed in Hollywood films over the decades. It’s a real opportunity for me to give a salute to them. Tonto was a sidekick in all the Lone Ranger series. [This film] is a very different approach to that partnership. And a funny one I think.”

They still haven’t announced who will play The Lone Ranger, but whoever they choose will have to have a great on screen presence. It will be hard to play the lead, when you’ve got someone like Johnny Depp sharing a scene with you. Who could pull it off?

Who do you think should play The Lone Ranger?

Kathy Bates and Harry’s Law Get Off to A Fine Start

Harrys Law 18 11 1 kc Kathy Bates and Harrys Law Get Off to A Fine Start

On Monday night, Kathy Bates returned to television and it had nothing to do with NBC’s “The Office.” The Oscar winning actress is headlining her own series called “Harry’s Law” about a sassy, no-nonsense lawyer who likes things done her way. Think of her as Judge Judy, but on the opposite side of the table. The ratings have come in and the people have spoken. “Harry’s Law” is — OK.

According to EW, “Law” brought in “a healthy 11 million viewers, but it earned a mere 2.1 adults 18-49 rating.” Compared to other NBC programs that have occupied the same time slot, it did OK for itself. Last fall, “Chase,”  averaged only a 1.5 rating when it occupied the same timeslot. Overall, the show came in second place for the 10 pm hour, and it beat its lead-in “The Cape,” which only brought in to 6.2 million viewers.

Speaking of “The Cape,” the drama suffered a huge dip in the ratings. It dropped 31% from last Sunday’s premiere, which is dangerous. Perhaps they need to ditch some the late-nineties WB writing and get a little more contemporary. We like the premise but “The Cape” would have fared much better if it was released 10 years ago and was sandwiched between an episode of “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and “Smallville.”

Did you watch Harry’s Law last night? What did you think?

Out of this bunch of newbies, we like Ramone. He looks like an old school low rider from Los Angeles. We used to think Lightning had the sweetest design, but Ramone might be giving him a run for his money.

Star race car Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and the incomparable tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) take their friendship to exciting new places in Cars 2 when they head overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world's fastest car. But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage. Adding to the fast-paced fun is a colorful new all-car cast that includes secret agents, menacing villains and international racing competitors.

Cars 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on June 24, 2011 and it will be available in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D.
