| Michelle Pfeiffer to Play Chris Pine’s Mom in Welcome to People Posted: 10 Jan 2011 05:50 PM PST
Yes! Michelle Pfeiffer is getting more work. The actress who dominated the eighties and nineties is returning to the big screen. Not only does she have a supporting part in the Garry Marshall rom-com New Years Eve, but she’s just landed a role in Alex Kurtzman’s directorial debut Welcome to People. Michelle is back!
According to EW, Pfeiffer has been cast as Chris Pine’s widowed mother in the film. The drama centers on a man who must deliver $150,000 in cash to an alcoholic sister he didn't know he had after the death of their father. Without telling her who he is, the guy also gets involved in the life of her angry 12-year old son. Pine stars as the man, while Elizabeth Banks plays his drunk sibling, and Olivia Wilde has been cast in the role of Hannah, the girlfriend of Pine's character. Kurtzman co-wrote the screenplay for the film with his longtime collaborator Roberto Orci, who will also help him produce via their DreamWorks-based Paper Products company. We’re more than a little happy to see Pfeiffer land this part. She’s an amazing actress who deserves the work. What do you think of Pfeiffer playing Pine’s mom? Are you excited to see her on the big screen again? Related Posts |
| C. Thomas Howell Joins Spider-Man Reboot Posted: 10 Jan 2011 04:58 PM PST
You might be asking yourself, “Where has C. Thomas Howell been?” The former eighties teen star who appeared in such films as The Outsiders, Red Dawn, The Hitcher, and Soul Man (yes Soul Man) has been keeping a low profile on television. The actor has done more than his fair share of SyFy Channel original movies, and has had guest spots on shows like “Psych” and “Southland.” Howell will now return to the big screen with a role in the highly anticipated Spider-Man reboot.
According to EW, Howell has been cast as a character named “Ray” in the Marc Webb directed feature. No details are given about the role so we’re not sure how he plays into the story. They note that no one by that name sticks out from the Spider-Man comic but there is someone named Ray Cooper, who is the supposedly deceased father of Spidey's current comic book girlfriend Carlie. Production on Spider-Man began last month in Los Angeles and we’ve seen our fair share of photos from the set featuring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. Spider-Man is scheduled to hit theaters on July 3, 2012 What do you think of Howell returning to the big screen? Who do you think Ray will be? Related Posts |
| Confirmed: Ian McKellen Returning for The Hobbit! Posted: 10 Jan 2011 04:01 PM PST
We (literally) just found out that Andy Serkis has signed on to reprise the role of Gollum in The Lord of the Rings prequel The Hobbit, and now we’ve learned that Ian McKellen will return too! We knew it was just a matter of time before he would officially come on board. This is turning into a real Lord of the Rings reunion!
The casting news comes from THR, who confirms McKellen and his doppelganger Gandalf will return for another stint in Middle Earth. This is McKellen’s first major film role since 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, and he definitely needs something to cover that atrocity and The Hobbit is just the thing! Both Gandalf and Gollum appear the book from which the film is based, and Gandalf actually serves as a catalyst for the story. Thus far, The Hobbit will feautre Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett, Andy Serkis, and McKellen, now all we need is Christopher Lee to make this complete. We wonder how all the actors will feel reuniting 10 years after they first met on Lord of the Rings? We smell instant nostalgia. What do you think of the growing cast of The Hobbit? Are you excited to see the movie? Related Posts |
| Andy Serkis Returning For The Hobbit! Posted: 10 Jan 2011 03:19 PM PST
A very important part of The Hobbit has been finalized: the return of Gollum. The character was played by Andy Serkis in the original Lord of the Rings and according to Deadline, he’s back! He’ll join several other LOTR alums including Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, and Cate Blanchett in the production.
The site is reporting that Serkis has signed on to reprise the character Gollum for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, Parts I and II. While McKellen is still in talks, they’re also awaiting confirmation from Christopher Lee, who’s set to return as the wizard Saruman, and Ian Holm to return as an older version of Bilbo Baggins. Martin Freeman plays the younger Bilbo in the film. Gollum made his first appearance in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit in the chapter “Riddles in the Dark,” which features the Ring of Power. Serkis will likely be present during the early portion of the shoot. We know a lot of people were on pins and needles wondering if he would return but we weren’t. This is The Hobbit, and no one can play that character like Serkis. Even if he and the studio disagreed on something, we’re sure they would have made it work until he signed on. It was never a matter of “if” just “when.” What do you think of Serkis’ return? Are you surprised. Related Posts |
| Showtime’s Californication and Shameless Premiere Ratings Are In Posted: 10 Jan 2011 02:12 PM PST
Sunday night was filled with premieres on the Showtime cable network. The David Duchovny led series “Californication” returned for its fourth season (is the show really that good?), and the U.S. adaptation of the British dramedy “Shameless” made its debut alongside Matt Leblanc’s television return in “Episodes.” The ratings are in so lets see who the winners and losers were last night…
“Californication” pulled in 848,000 viewers at 9 p.m. and 1.1. million if you count the repeat episode. The freshman series “Shameless” starring William H. Macy and Emmy Rossum earned 982,00 viewers (1.3 million for the night), giving it a slight upper hand on its lead-in. The Leblanc led comedy “Episodes” was the lowest of the night with 768,000 viewers (902,000 total for the evening). Overall it was a solid beginning to a new season of shows. We didn’t catch “Shameless” or “Episodes” but we’ve heard good things about the first and not so good things about the latter. Some say that “Episodes” gets better with time, but the pilot doesn’t leave a great impression. Where are all the “Friends” viewers when you need them? Joey needs your support here. Did you watch Showtime’s premiere block last night? What did you think? Source: EW Related Posts |
| 5 New Cips from The Dilemma – Less Comedy Than Expected Posted: 10 Jan 2011 01:58 PM PST
Despite The Dilemma being promoted as a “comedy” with comedic heavy weights Vince Vaughn and Mall Cop Paul… I mean Kevin James leading the way, from the look of these clips there’s a lot more too Ron Howard’s latest relationship adventure that the first trailer led us to believe… either that or it’s really not that funny as it’s supposed to be. Maybe it’s the lack of music or context but something about these clips leaves me wanting more. Watch the clips with some classic Ron Howard touches below…
Getting real…ly cheesy:
Obviously we have some big boy issues going on this film about how to be in a relationship which means, lots of talking sweetly on the floor… I want to know how they got to just be chilling on the floor and not on a comfy sofa. Ron Howard loves his Tiny Dancer:
Yeap… there it is. Lady Wood:
I’m hoping this clip is more funny in the film? If not, this is definitely leaning toward drama with a few moment trying to be funny. You’re my Hero:
These are the Ron Howard moments that some people love and some people hate. They are overly sentimental in a rom com type of way, but are supposed to be heavy and reveal a characters true feelings… I know where I stand, do you? The Panic Attack:
Hmmmm… leaves me wanting more. I wonder how the possible lack of comedy weighs on the whole controversial “gay” line in the film - if the film is not a comedy does that make the line better or worse? Definitely doesn’t bod well for Vince Vaughn’s comment "Comedy and joking about our differences breaks tension and brings us together,” which I tried to back up before. Damn Vaughn don’t leave me hanging! Guess we’ll just have to see it to find out! The cast also includes Jennifer Connelly, Winona Ryder, Channing Tatum and Queen Latifah. The Dilemma opens in theaters January 14, 2011. What do you think of the latest clips for The Dilemma? Is it funny? Related Posts |
| History Channel Won’t Air The Kennedys Miniseries Posted: 10 Jan 2011 01:20 PM PST
A while back we reported that The History Channel was gearing up to take its first step into scripted television. The cable network was preparing to air a big-budget mini-series entitled, The Kennedys, which centers on the politically charged title characters. Over the weekend it was announced that the network has no intention of airing the series even though its wrapped production.
According to the THR, the History Channel released a statement on Friday saying, the "dramatic interpretation" of the Kennedys’ story "is not a fit for the History brand." Here’s the complete explanation below:
Apparently, THC prides itself on accuracy and this film might have taken too much creative license for their taste. Even though the network saw the final draft of the script, they felt that the movie didn’t have enough historical truth, which we can understand being a problem. They are called The History Channel for a reason. The producers of the film are currently trying to shop it to other networks. The Kennedys is still scheduled to air in Canada on March 6, and will still be broadcast internationally. The film stars Greg Kinnear as John F. Kennedy, Barry Pepper as Robert F. Kennedy, and Tom Wilkinson as the family patriarch Joseph P. Kennedy, and Katie Holmes as Jackie Kennedy. What do you think of The History Channel’s decision to scrap the movie? Who should pick it up? Related Posts |
| Confirmed: Colin Farrell for Total Recall Posted: 10 Jan 2011 12:29 PM PST
Back in October it was reported that Irish actor Colin Farrell was in talks to star in the remake of the cult sci-fi film Total Recall. The original was released in 1990 and starred Arnold Schwarzeneggar and to say that the actors look nothing alike would be an understatement. But despite their physical differences, Farrell is being primed to take over the lead in the new film based on the Philip K. Dick story.
Collider recently spoke to both Farrell and producer Neal Moritz about what we can expect from the remake. When it comes to the story, Farrell described the script as “cool” and “smart.”
Even though they don’t go into specifics one major story bombshell was dropped from Moritz: they’re not going into space!
That’s a bit of a let down and a shock. We understand that they’re trying to take their own path with this material but come on. We need to see someone’s head explode from lack of oxygen! What’s Total Recall without someone’s eyes bugging out of their head? What do you think of Farrell starring in Total Recall? Are you upset that it won’t take place on Mars? Related Posts |
| ABC Picks Up Modern Family, Grey’s Anatomy, Castle For Another Season Posted: 10 Jan 2011 11:27 AM PST
ABC has decided to give early renewals to several shows on their roster. The long running drama “Grey’s Anatomy” will return for more next year as well as its spin-off “Private Practice.” Despite what some people might think about “Grey’s” current storylines, it still pulls in solid ratings for the network, so this decision shouldn’t come as a shock.
According to THR, ABC’s Wednesday night comedy line up has proven to be a winning combination so they’ve decided to keep them on the schedule. Early renewals have gone out for “The Middle,” “Modern Family,” and “Cougar Town.” The network has also grown fond of the Nathan Fillion led series “Castle,” which has also been picked up for another season. Out of the comedies we’re the most excited about “Cougar Town.” The name doesn’t represent what the show is really about. It’s really funny, and if you liked “Scrubs,” it’s right up your ally. As for the dramas, “Castle” has become a cult favorite so we’re not surprised that they’re sticking with it, but on the other hand shouldn’t “Grey’s Anatomy” be coming to an end? What more can they do with that show? What do you think of ABC’s shows of choice? Do they all deserve early pick ups? Related Posts |
| Quentin Tarantino Wins First Ever Music+Film Award Posted: 10 Jan 2011 10:44 AM PST
The Broadcast Film Critics Association has just announced that they’re cool! Or something like that… For their upcoming 16th annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards, they have invented a new award to show how awesome they really are. The will be presenting award winning and much loved director Quentin Tarantino with the first ever Critics' Choice Music+Film Award. That’s visual meets audio, cinema meets musical, eyes meets ears, the all around sensation award! And I’ll stop with the sarcastic tone for a moment to say, yeah, the guys earned it!
I was with the award until they said Maroon 5 would be performing a “musical tribute,” then it just reminded me who much I hate award ceremonies. Is a well edited montage just too difficult for them? How about an orchestral piece? Something better than a band who has such an incredibly different style of music than anything Tarantino has ever used in any of his films present the man with something he might actually enjoy listening to!? Though the whole idea of the award comes from wanting to get young audiences interested, they also want to (and rightly so) honor Tarantino who, “throughout his career, has truly harnessed the power of a single song and created unforgettable, heart-breaking, exhilarating, and always dynamic moments that remain in the minds of his audience.” That sounds fun! I think they’re playing on some cliches, but hell, Tarantino is a great filmmaker and I’ve played every single one of his soundtracks until my CD player (did I just date myself? Or did the use of words like “cool” and “awesome” already do that?) actually bleed. So at least the award is at least warranted! You can watch Maroon 5 discrete Tarantino’s music and watch the big man himself accept the award this Friday, January 14th at 9 PM ET/PT on VH1, the Critics' Choice Movie Awards. More details on this announcement can be found via the official press release What do you think about the award and Maroon 5 playing the tribute? Related Posts |
| 2011 Directors Guild Nominees – Nolan, Aronofsky, Fincher Chosen Posted: 10 Jan 2011 10:36 AM PST
The Directors Guild of America has announced its nominees for the 63rd annual ceremony. None of the names mentioned come as a shock but there are two very bold, and very obvious omissions. Before we get to the negative, let’s concentrate of those who were chosen for their outstanding directorial skills in 2010. Check out the five lucky helmers below…
This year’s five picks are hard to choose from. Usually there are one or two people you can omit, but that’s not the case here. Every person nominated turned in a solid film and they each have resumes filled with equally great material. There’s a part of us that wants each of them to take home the award but we know that’s not possible! The big surprise from the Guild comes with the absence of the Coen Brothers who were not nominated for their work on True Grit. They previously won the award back in 2007 for No Country for Old Men. The DGA will announce the winner of the award on Saturday, January 29. What do you think of the Directors Guild Nominees? Who do you think will win? Source: THR Related Posts |
| Trent Reznor to Score The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Posted: 10 Jan 2011 09:31 AM PST
When David Fincher finds something or someone that works, he sticks with them (just ask Brad Pitt, Kevin Spacey, and Rooney Mara). Fincher’s most recent creative collaboration was with Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor who scored his drama The Social Network. According to Billboard, they will make more magic together because he’s been tapped to compose the music for Fincher’s adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
Reznor will also reunite with writing partner Atticus Ross, who also co-composed The Social Network score. Their winning combination earned them a Golden Globe nomination for their work. In an interview with The New York Times, Reznor revealed that the sound of Dragon Tattoo will be greatly different from The Social Network. The score will “rely more on string arrangements than the electronic-leaning music.” The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is set to hit theaters this Christmas so it will be a long time before we get to hear what the score has to offer. But Reznor assures us that he’s already completed “over two hours’ worth of music over the past month with Ross.” What do you think of Fincher reuniting with Reznor and Ross for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo?
