Country Strong: Movie Review

Country Strong Gwyneth Paltrow 6 1 11 kc Country Strong: Movie Review

The last time we saw Gwyneth Paltrow burst into song on the big screen was in the 2000 film Duets, where she sang alongside Huey Lewis. Over a decade later she’s back, but she’s solo and taking on the role of a music superstar in the drama Country Strong. Written and directed by Shana Feste, the film chronicles the rise of an entertainer who hit rock bottom, and is trying to regain the trust and support of her fans and her husband.

Check out the review…

The Players:

The Plot:

Kelly Canter (Paltrow) is a successful country singer who’s sent to rehab after her addiction with alcohol causes her to collapse during a huge show. She goes through a stint at a facility but is released early at the request of her manager and husband James (McGraw). While a patient, Kelly developed a close friendship with her sponsor Beau (Hedlund) who happens to be an amazing singer. Beau becomes one of the opening acts on her comeback tour, alongside a young songstress named Chiles, who Kelly sees as an impending threat. Amidst their travels they’re forced to deal with addiction, love, triumph, and tragedy.

The Good:

  • Music: The writer/director went after some of country’s heaviest hitters when it came to producing songs for this film and it shows. Every one of the tracks could be real contemporary hits if given the chance. Not only that but all the actors have enough vocal talent to pull them off.
  • Garrett Hedlund: A few weeks ago in my review for Tron Legacy, I stated that Hedlund is a decent actor but he wasn’t given decent material to work with in the film. Therefore his character came across as one dimensional and uninteresting. In Country Strong he’s the exact opposite. Paltrow may be the headliner but he’s the heart of this story. Beau is a simple guy who doesn’t get distracted by all the razzle dazzle the entertainment business has to offer. Hedlund did a great job of conveying that.

The Bad:

  • Cliche Galore: Country Strong fails to find an original voice (pun intended) because every plot point, every struggle, and every problem thrown at the characters has been used and abused in other movies that cover the same topic. If you’ve seen Tender Mercies, Crazy Heart, The Coal Miner’s Daughter, or The Thing Called Love, you’ve seen this movie already.
  • The Build Up: Without spoiling the final act of the film, a huge event occurs that effects all the major characters and it comes completely out of left field. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have the desired effect because it doesn’t feel earned. The build up and tension isn’t there.
  • The Message: “Fame and Love can’t live in the same place” is the message this film wants to bring across but it doesn’t quite accomplish it. It feels like it’s shoehorned in at the last minute, and the audience is supposed to be left pondering. It just doesn’t work out that way.

Overall:

Country Strong is a mediocre take on something that we’ve all seen before but what it lacks in originality of plot, it makes up for in music.

Rating: 4.5/10

Country Strong opens in theaters January 7.

Warner Bros Will Handle Worldwide Distribution of The Hobbit

The Hobbit logo 18 10 10 kc Warner Bros Will Handle Worldwide Distribution of The Hobbit

Warner Bros and MGM have just revealed which one of them will handle the distribution of their joint venture The Hobbit. Previously, it was understood that one would handle international and the other domestic, but according to their press announcement Warners will takeover the worldwide release of the film. No surprise there.

From the Warner Bros/MGM Press Release:

LOS ANGELES, CA, January 6, 2011- Roger Birnbaum and Gary Barber, MGM Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officers, Toby Emmerich, President and Chief Operating Officer, New Line Cinema and Alan Horn, President and Chief Operating Officer, Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that MGM and Warner Bros have concluded a deal for Warner Bros. Pictures to handle international theatrical and video distribution responsibilities on MGM's behalf for Peter Jackson's highly anticipated adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit". This arrangement results in Warner Bros. Pictures handling the bulk of worldwide distribution, while MGM will handle international television licensing for the films. MGM and WB will work collaboratively to coordinate marketing and release plans worldwide.

The two "Hobbit" films are set to begin production in February 2011, with release dates targeted for December 2012 and December 2013. Jackson will utilize groundbreaking visual effects and his incomparable storytelling to bring Tolkien's novel to the big screen. Both "Hobbit" movies will be filmed in Digital 3-D, using the latest camera and stereo technology to create a high quality, comfortable viewing experience.

Considering the shaky state of MGM’s finances no one should be surprised by this decision. It’s in the best interest of the film and everyone else involved.

What do you think of Warner Bros solely distributing The Hobbit? Is it a good move?

Amber Heard in John Carpenter’s The Ward Trailer

the ward movie 6 1 11 kc Amber Heard in John Carpenters The Ward Trailer

A trailer has been released for legendary director John Carpenter’s latest work The Ward. The movie stars Amber Heard as a young woman on the run against truly insane forces. The film shares a lot of similarities with Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch but unfortunately, it doesn’t have a U.S. release date yet. We wonder why? Check out the trailer below…

default video player Amber Heard in John Carpenters The Ward Trailer

The Ward centers on a young woman who is locked up in a mental institution after she supposedly set a house on fire. Once she’s checked in, she become haunted by what seems to be the ghost of a former patient. From that point on horror and jump scares ensue.

Are we the only ones who get a David Goyer - The Unborn vibe from this film? It looks very old school but the scares in it are generic and too premeditated for our taste. Nothing sticks out as interesting or unique.

The Ward is scheduled to open in U.K. theaters on January 21. We’re not sure when it will get a domestic release, but when we find out we’ll let you know.

What do you think of the trailer for The Ward? Are you interested in seeing the film?

New Domestic Trailer for Paul

Paul 6 1 11 kc New Domestic Trailer for Paul

The first domestic trailer for Greg Mottola’s Paul has been released. The video debuted over on Apple and it features Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and the scraggly voice of Seth Rogen as the title character. The movie takes two British sci-fi geeks on an American journey that puts them on the run alongside an alien. Interesting concept? Check out the trailer below…

default video player New Domestic Trailer for Paul

This trailer actually makes Paul seem like a fun traveling buddy. He’s like ET but more abrasive and gross. We’re not sure if that’s a good thing, but somehow he makes it work. Even though Sigourney Weaver stars in the film, they only feature her voice in the trailer. We wonder if they’ll keep her hidden for the majority of the movie too?

Official Synopsis:

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) reunite for the comedy adventure Paul as two sci-fi geeks whose pilgrimage takes them to America's UFO heartland. While there, they accidentally meet an alien who brings them on an insane road trip that alters their universe forever.

For the past 60 years, an alien named Paul (Rogen) has been hanging out at a top-secret military base. For reasons unknown, the space-traveling smart ass decides to escape the compound and hop on the first vehicle out of town—a rented RV containing Earthlings Graeme Willy (Pegg) and Clive Collings (Frost).

Chased by federal agents and the fanatical father of a young woman that they accidentally kidnap, Graeme and Clive hatch a fumbling escape plan to return Paul to his mother ship. And as two nerds struggle to help, one little green man might just take his fellow outcasts from misfits to intergalactic heroes.

Paul is scheduled to hit domestic theaters on March 18.

Sienna Miller Joins Marshall’s New Year’s Eve

sienna miller 6 1 11 kc Sienna Miller Joins Marshalls New Years Eve

The cast of Garry Marshall’s unofficial sequel to Valentine’s Day continues to grow with the addition of Sienna Miller. According to Variety, the British actress has joined the overstuffed roster which currently includes Robert De Niro, Hilary Swank, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sofia Vergara, Jessica Biel, Lea Michele, Abigail Breslin, Ashton Kutcher, Halle Berry, Zac Efron, and Til Schweiger.

New Year's Eve centers on the intertwining stories of a group of New Yorkers as they navigate their way through bittersweet drama and romance over the course of New Year's Eve. The various romances or non-romances will intersect and weave an overall plot laced with love and loss. There’s been no word on who Miller will play or what her character will be up to.

During the development of this movie, we’ve been hearing a lot of comparisons to Valentine’s Day (naturally) and He’s Just Not That Into You, both of which or fair but they hit a road block when they drag Love Actually into the mix. Not only was that a better movie that utilized love and the holidays, but it was written well.

We love Marshall, but Valentine’s Day was seriously lacking and we don’t if New Year’s Eve will be any better.

What do you think of Miller joining the cast of New Year’s Eve? Did you like Valentine’s Day?

The Wind in the Willows 6 11 11 kc Ricky Gervais to Voice The Mole in The Wind in the Willows

At one point or another, most adults had to read The Wind in the Willows when they were a kid. The classic story was written by Scotland native Kenneth Grahame and first published in 1908. It’s been around for over 100 years and it’s still very much a part of children’s lives today. According to Variety, an animated version of Willows is about to hit the big screen and one of the prominent characters will be voiced by none other than Ricky Gervais.

The Wind in the Willows will be directed by Ray Griggs, who’s working with Peter Jackson’s Zew Zealand based WETA to do the animation. The screenplay is adapted by Bill Marsilii, and centers on various animal characters in the pastures of England. The main ones being Mole, Ratty, Mr. Toad, Mr. Badger, Otter and Portly, The Gaoler’s Daughter, Pan, and The Wayfarer.

Synopsis:

When Mole ventures out of his lonely home for the first time, he finds a world of new friendships and breathless adventure waiting for him in the land of the Willows. From the joys of boating on the river, to Mr. Toad’s unbelievable antics at Toad Hall… from the dark terrors of the Wild Wood and beyond, to the forbidden land of the Humans… Mole, Rat, Badger and Toad will soon find that they must join forces, in a quest to save their homes from a sinister plot that could cost them their lives – and that could indeed bring about the destruction of the Willows itself.

Who would have thought that Gervais would bring the Mole to life one day?

What do you think of Gervais starring in the film?

Terra Nova Save Your Breathe 6 11 11 kc First Photos: Steven Spielbergs Terra Nova

Over the past year we’ve been hearing about a new, sci-fi series from Steven Spielberg called “Terra Nova.” With the exception of the plot synopsis and a few casting briefs here and there we had no idea what to expect from the show. The production got off to a rocky start and no photos or trailers had been released — until now. The first images from the series have hit the net and you can check them out below…

As you can see, Jason O’Mara is in papa bear mode as he tries to protect his family from an impending threat. Out of all the shows coming out next season, this is the one that we have the most questions about. You don’t want to judge a book by its cover, but to be honest these photos look like they were taken from a Syfy original movie. What do you think?

Official Synopsis:

The series centers on the Shannon family as they join the tenth pilgrimage of settlers to TERRA NOVA, the first colony of humans in this second chance for civilization. JIM SHANNON (O'Mara), a devoted father with a checkered past, guides his family – wife ELISABETH and children JOSH and MADDY – through this new land of limitless beauty, mystery and terror. In addition to blue skies, rolling rivers and lush vegetation, TERRA NOVA offers new opportunities and fresh beginnings to its recent arrivals, but the Shannons have brought with them a famial secret that may threaten their citizenship in this utopia. These adventurers soon discover that this healthy, vibrant world is not as idyllic as it initially appears. The areas surrounding TERRA NOVA are filled with dangerous dinosaurs and other prehistoric threats, as well as external forces that may be intent on destroying this new world before it begins.

What do you think of the first photos from Terra Nova? Will you watch?

Katy Perry to Guest Star on How I Met Your Mother

katy perry 6 11 11 kc Katy Perry to Guest Star on How I Met Your Mother

Katy Perry is everywhere! She’s not Twilight everywhere, but she’s getting pretty close. The pop singer is moving from the world of music to television and film. She will appear in the upcoming CGI/live action comedy The Smurfs later this year, and according to THR she’ll also guest star on an episode of the CBS hit, “How I Met Your Mother.” Once again we say, she’s everywhere!

CBS announced that Perry will guest star on the episode entitled, “Oh Honey,” where she’ll play a love interest for Josh Radnor’s character Ted. She’s described as “a beautiful, naive girl who the gang resorts to calling ‘honey,’” and who happens to be Zoey’s (Jennifer Morrison) cousin.

“Katy is a tremendous talent and we are delighted to be able to work with her,” said Carter Bays, co-creator and executive producer of the show.

This casting choice is like six degrees of separation over here. Perry co-starred with “How I Met Your Mother’ regular Neil Patrick Harris in The Smurfs, and her husband Russell Brand has worked with Jason Segel on two films (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek).

What do you think of Perry guest starring on How I Met Your Mother? Will you watch?
