Posted: 05 Jan 2011 05:25 PM PST ![]() The Academy better watch out because Julia Roberts is on the prowl. The actress, who won an Oscar in the past for her performance in Erin Brockovich, is actively campaigning for someone other than herself. She wants to see her good friend and Eat Pray Love co-star Javier Bardem get some much deserved recognition for his work in his latest film Biutiful. Over the past month or so, we’ve been bombarded with various guild, association, and critic award nominations, and for the most part Bardem and his film have been M.I.A. Roberts thinks the movie has unfortunately gotten lost in the shuffle. Julia Roberts: “I think the movie hasn’t gotten the exposure. You don’t know where it is. It’s like this hidden little jewel. Especially in this particular season, people don’t hunt for things. They just take what you throw in their face.”The actress was so touched and amazed by Bardem’s performance in the film that she stated that if he doesn’t get recognized by the Academy “we’re f–cked.” We’re pretty sure you can fill in those blanks. Julia Roberts: He’s so raw and completely open to sharing every emotion this character has. I was telling him at dinner tonight, when I watched it I had to keep stopping and saying, “Okay, this is not actually happening to Javier.” Because it’s his face and his big eyes. I think it’s unexpected for a man to expose himself so deeply. And it’s incredibly agonizing in its subtleties. I just have a great appreciation for what he went through to show us all this. I know it had to hurt. Thus far it looks like some of the Best Actor contenders could include Colin Firth, James Franco, Jesse Eisenberg, Ryan Gosling, Jeff Bridges, and Mark Wahlberg. Bardem has definitely got his work is cut out for him. Biutiful opened in limited release on December 29. Have you seen Biutiful? Do you think Bardem deserves a nod? Source: EW Related Posts |
Posted: 05 Jan 2011 04:00 PM PST ![]() In “we didn’t see that coming” news, Robert Pattinson has landed a lead role in David Cronenberg’s upcoming film Cosmopolis. According to Deadline, this will mark the British actor’s first post-Twilight gig following the completion of Breaking Dawn. The last time we heard anything about the film was back in May when Colin Farrell and Marion Cotillard were set to star. Here’s what’s happened since then… Originally there was word that Farrell would play Eric Packer, a financial wunderkind who risks his entire fortune to bet against the yen on a tumultuous day. He’s an asset manager who loses all his wealth over the course of 24 hours and Cotillard was set to play his wife. Even though it seems that Farrell is no longer attached Cotillard is said to still be on board along with Paul Giamatti. We would say that it would be weird to see Pattinson with Cotillard as a love interest but he’s worked with older women in the past (Reese Witherspoon in Water for Elephants). We think more than anything it will be strange seeing him as someone’s husband and an asset manager for a big business. He’s usually so emo and sad in everything else. What do you think of Pattinson starring in Cosmopolis? Do you think he can pull it off? Related Posts |
Posted: 05 Jan 2011 03:36 PM PST ![]() The live action G.I. Joe franchise will be missing a familiar face when the sequel comes around according to the Los Angeles Times. Stephen Sommers, who helmed the first film, won’t return to direct the second one. This is a shock considering back in August it was confirmed that he was on board, along with the original cast. The majority of the actors from the first film were contractually obligated to appear in future sequels, but Sommers didn’t have that same luxury. Apparently agents representing other directors claim that their clients have been approached to take over directing duties because Sommers won’t be behind the camera. Paramount refuses to comment on the situation. The first movie grossed $302 million worldwide, which gave the studio enough of a reason to bankroll another installment. They hired Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to pen the screenplay for the follow up over a year ago, since then it’s been relatively quiet on the pre-production front. G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra wasn’t groundbreaking in any way (read our review) but it wasn’t a boring embarrassment. Who do you think should direct the G.I. Joe sequel? Are you even interested in seeing another movie from the franchise? Related Posts |

Posted: 05 Jan 2011 02:02 PM PST ![]() Even though The A-Team wasn’t a runaway hit like many of us thought it would be, it didn’t sour the relationship between director Joe Carnahan and star Liam Neeson. The duo plans on working together again on another project according to Deadline. The film is called The Grey, and it’s a thriller set against the backdrop of the Alaskan tundra. Just thinking about that makes us shiver! The Grey was recently green-lit and is expected to start production next week with a cast led by Neeson that features Dallas Roberts, James Badge Dale, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo, Nonso Anozie, and Joe Anderson. The story will follow an unlucky group that “gets stranded by a plane crash right in the hunting zone of a pack of rogue wolves on the frozen Alaskan tundra.” If that doesn’t spell terror we don’t know what does. The shoot will take place in Vancouver, and the director thinks the frigid weather will help the cast deliver more believable performances. He said, “In a way, it's great, because it beats the shit out of the cast and that suits the storyline." Filming will last for about 40 days and it will follow a typical indie style schedule. Carnahan admits that he hasn’t experienced anything like it since he worked on 2002’s Narc. What do you think of Neeson and Carnahan reuniting for The Grey? What do you think of the premise? Posted: 05 Jan 2011 12:36 PM PST ![]() The first trailer has been released for Keanu Reeves’ dark comedy Henry’s Crime. The film centers on a robbery and prison but it’s a lot lighter than we thought it would be. There’s an unsuspecting romance thrown into the plot. Besides Reeves, the film features performances by Oscar nominees Vera Farmiga and James Caan, who plays the typical veteran crook role. Check out the trailer… ![]() Henry’s Crime centers on a man who’s down on his luck, who joins a play in order to successfully pull off a bank heist. It sounds ridiculous, but there’s more. He falls in love with his leading lady all the while getting advice from a convict (Caan) who happens to really love prison. The film is directed by Malcolm Venville, and the script was written by Sacha Gervasi, who recently produced and directed Anvil! The Story of Anvil. No release date has been announced as of yet, but the film did debut at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. The reviews weren’t horrible so that means that it might see the light of day. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for the cast. What do you think of the trailer for Henry’s Crime? Related Posts |
Posted: 05 Jan 2011 12:00 PM PST ![]() Gwyneth Paltrow returns to the mic in her latest feature film entitled Country Strong. It’s a drama that centers on a country music superstar who’s hit rock bottom in her career and her personal life. The actress, who has a perfectly good singing voice, takes center stage alongside real life music veteran Tim McGraw who plays her worrisome husband in the film. When we had the opportunity to speak to Paltrow about her latest gig, she opened up about the wonders of the country genre, and the hard work that went into creating her onstage persona. Check out the interview… There's a really rich history of movies about country music. Did you watch any of them in preparation for the role? Gwyneth Paltrow: I watch a lot of them. I watched Tender Mercies a lot, and The Coal Miner's Daughter. And I watched a lot of DVD performance videos to prepare and I studied all of the ladies of country. Because it wasn't like I was playing someone who was trying to be a country music singer, I was playing a huge country music star, which was much more daunting, because some movies are about somebody who is trying to make it or are on their way to making it, but she's on the way down and had been this massive star. So I was like, "Wait a minute, how do you play being a huge country star?" So I just watched everybody. But, honestly, I think the thing that made me feel, "Okay, I sort of feel like I get this" is I watched Beyonce a ton – because I think she's the best live performer happening right now – and she has this amazing confidence. And I thought to myself, "If I can just get a tiny bit of that self-confidence, then maybe I can pull off this scene at the end." You wouldn't necessarily think that Beyonce would be an inspiration for country music, right? [laughs]You’ve performed in films in the past, do you have a formal singing background? GP: Well, I had never studied voice and I have a naturally, perfectly nice singing voice, but these songs had a lot of scope to them and I really needed to build up a strength. And my singing teacher in London was really a task master and was really focused on getting a much bigger voice out of me, which I was surprised to find in myself. So that was kind of exciting. And just working on all of the technical parts of singing and also learning how to sing something over and over and over again.Have you always been a fan of country music? GP: No, I grew up in New York City where there's no country music radio stations so I just wasn't exposed to it. Of course, you hear the major things, the crossover acts, and I loved a lot of the crossovers like Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, and Patty Griffin. I remember going to see John Prine when I was younger, but I was never exposed to it a lot or heard it a lot until I took the role and then I sort of had to get serious about learning about country music. And I really fell in love with it. I mean, this whole thing is very surprising to me, but to discover a whole genre of music at 37 years old and be all psyched about it and geek out on it was fun. I never thought I would be a country music fan or singer or anything. ![]() GP: Quite a lot, actually. People in country music are really nice people. They're very warm and they're very open and supportive of each other, and they've got a lot of southern hospitality. It was nice. It didn't feel as cutthroat as other lines of entertainment. It's really nice people. When you're standing on stage in front of thousands of people, even during a movie shoot do you feel like a rock star? GP: Well, not entirely, but when we were shooting the end of the movie where I do this big performance, by halfway though the day – because at first I was terrified – but then by halfway through the day I thought, "Oh, this is actually kind of fun. I can see why people do this job." But, of course, my fans were paid to be there [laughs]. It guarantees a good response. How did you learn the accent? GP: I had a really good accent coach and we were in Tennessee. I was always nervous to do it in front of Tim, just because a) he teases me all the freaking time and b) his accent is so… but once I got the stamp of approval from Tim I was like, "Okay."Is this the beginning of a new work cycle for you? You have taken off a few years in the past and had breaks between projects. Are we going to be seeing a lot more of you? GP: No, don't worry [laughs]. I can do kind of one thing a year. I did this at the beginning of [last] year, in January, and then the Contagion thing was like one day in Hong Kong and like four days in Chicago, so I was able to squeeze that in. But I really can't do more than one thing a year. It's just not worth it to my family and everything. ![]() GP: My character in that is totally unaware. I get the virus very early on. Kate Winslet plays the CDC doctor. I'm not playing like someone from the Czech Republic who does backhand springs or anything like that. It's pretty straight forward. How is it being a part of this ensemble? GP: The movie is a really exciting movie. We all kind of have these little parts in it. We're all important parts in the whole overall thing. It's exciting for me because I got to work with Steven Soderbergh.Do you get to be in The Avengers? GP: No, I'm not in The Avengers. ![]() GP: I don't know. I think it comes out in 2013, so I don't know. I haven't heard anything about anything yet. I really don't know. What's been piling up around the house while you've been out working? GP: I don't know. I don't like to let too many things pile up, although I'm a terrible script reader. I'll have a script, and I'll see the movie coming out and I'm like, "I'm sure that's on my desk. I meant to read that." [laughs]What does it take for you to pick up a script from the pile? GP: Well, this one, for example, my friend, Jenno [Topping], was the producer and she's been a really good friend of mine for like 15 years. So she just beat the shit out of me until I read it [laughs]. But I'm glad I did! ![]() Country Strong opens in theaters everywhere on January 7. Related Posts |
Posted: 05 Jan 2011 11:39 AM PST ![]() Sony just released a number of new pictures and synopsis’ for their upcoming films, but the one that caught my eye is Roland Emmerich’s Anonymous. You have Emmerich, the man known for destroying the world in a variety of end of the world scenarios in 2012, The Day After Tomorrow and others, taking on a drama that challenges one of the most famous authors of all time, William Shakespeare. Taking on Shakespeare in any way, whether it be about him or his work itself, is always a touchy subject because everyone has such high expectations for anything associated with his name and immediately questions name of anyone who attempts to tackle his work. Sometimes the filmmakers try to be overly clever or seem to not understand the text itself. Other times you get something great like Shakespeare in Love or Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet. It’s a bit of a crap shoot and one that only the brave should tackle. Luckily for Emmerich, bravery seems to be something he’s quite comfortable with. Anonymous is a film (with a great title I might add) that takes place in the Elizabethan era and asks the timeless question, who is the true writer of Shakespeare’s works? We have no real idea of the tone of the film, but we do know he cast a number of real actors such as Rhys Ifans and Vanessa Redgrave instead of A-list celebrities, so it should be a given that he’s going for a “real” film and not something sensational. And for those actors to sign on one could guess that the script must have been meaty enough to capture their attention (though The Tempest captured Helen Mirren and I have no idea why that is). It seems as Emmerich will be going for a rather interesting, new-wave, high-brow film. Is he capable of such a feat? Well the story seems to be there… Official Synopsis: Set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, Anonymous speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds ranging from Mark Twain and Charles Dickens to Henry James and Sigmund Freud, namely: who was the author of the plays credited to William Shakespeare? Experts have debated, books have been written, and scholars have devoted their lives to protecting or debunking theories surrounding the authorship of the most renowned works in English literature. Anonymous poses one possible answer, focusing on a time when cloak-and-dagger political intrigue, illicit romances in the Royal Court, and the schemes of greedy nobles hungry for the power of the throne were exposed in the most unlikely of places: the London stage.Though there does seem to be a lot of eye-liner… ![]() Are you interested in the film? Do you think Emmerich can tackle Shakespeare, or more to the point, drama? Related Posts |

Instead of releasing a press announcement like any normal group would, they’ve been unveiling the names of attendees via Twitter. Yep, the HFPA are hip with the times. Check out the presenters below… In a bid to promote their latest film Country Strong (opens January 7), Sony announced that co-stars Garrett Hedlund and Leighton Meester will be on hand to present during the telecast along with Twilight’s Robert Pattinson. And the newest “American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez will also take the stage on the big night. In an interesting twist, Matt Damon has been named as one of the people who’ll introduce Robert De Niro, when he receives his Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award. We know De Niro directed him in The Good Shephard but we thought that Martin Scorsese or Harvey Keitel would have that honor? Maybe they’ll all be a part of it, who knows? Posted: 05 Jan 2011 10:37 AM PST ![]() Alec Baldwin has never been one to bite his tongue. The opinionated, yet hilarious star of “30 Rock” has been interested in politics for a long time and now reports are springing up that he wants to run for office. Could you imagine him making major decisions for large groups of people, whether as a major or a governor? Baldwin appeared on CNN’s “Parker Spitzer” where he answered the age old question, “When are you going to get into this game?” Here’s Baldwin’s response: If Arnold Schwarzenegger can do it, we believe that anyone can. Baldwin is pretty well informed when it comes to the government and he doesn’t seem like the type who would take a lot of stuff lying down. Could you imagine him chewing out some dirty Congressman over a shady bill? That would be entertaining to watch. On the other hand, he did say that it would be extremely painful for him to set aside his acting career for such a long period of time to occupy an office. It’s a Catch-22. You’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t. We guess he can’t have it all. What do you think of Baldwin possibly going from actor to politician? Source: CNN Related Posts |
Posted: 05 Jan 2011 09:50 AM PST ![]() Earlier this week, James Cameron appeared at a special 3D event promoting his latest film Sanctum. He serves as producer along with Andrew Wight, while Alister Grierson takes on directing duties. The movie is based on actual events and takes viewers into a world of cave diving and illustrates its many dangers. All three men were in attendance at Universal City Walk, where they spoke about the use of 3D in this smaller film in comparison to Cameron’s epic Avatar. Surprisingly, they all felt that Sanctum does a much better job of submerging an audience in the 3D world. Check out some video of Cameron at the event as he explains his reasoning below… ![]() Overall, he’s saying that the experience of watching the 3D in Sanctum will be a lot more visible because it’s not done on such a huge scale and there’s not as much CGI. He said it best himself, “The difference between experiencing Sanctum in 2D and 3D is actually much greater because the 3D will constantly be informing you, in the experience of watching the movie, with the sense of claustrophobia. 3D works best in small spaces. ” Intimacy is the key here. Sanctum is scheduled to hit theaters on February 4. If you haven’t already seen it, check out the trailer. What do you think of Cameron’s take on Sanctum vs Avatar’s 3D? Does he have a point?
