Spider-Man Set Photos: Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone Get Close

A month ago we got our first glance at Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy in the Spider-Man reboot, but Andrew Garfield was nowhere in sight. Today some paparazzi photos have appeared online that feature the British actor who plays the title character and his alter ego Peter Parker in the film. From the looks of it, Parker and Stacy are pretty close and have no problem showing public displays of affection to one another. Take a look…

These photos were taken at a football stadium in Los Angeles, which might double for a school stadium where Peter and Gwen are students. Does it still bother anyone else that they’re going back to the young days? College we can deal with but high school (sigh)? Anyway, the duo seem to be sharing a tender moment with each other, which ends in a kiss. This obviously isn’t a case of unrequited love.

We’ve accepted Stone in this role and we think Garfield is an amazingly talented actor but we still don’t see him Spider-Man. What do you think?

Spider-Man is scheduled to hit theaters on July 12, 2012.

What do you think of the latest photos from Spider-Man? Are you interested in seeing the reboot?

Gemma Arterton Cast in Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

Clash of the Titans Gemma Arterton as Io 31 3 10 kc Gemma Arterton Cast in Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

Gemma Arterton has moved on from one epic to another, by landing a lead role in Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. The film will be a new adaptation of the famous folktale according to Variety. The actress will play Gretel alongside Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner who’s been cast in the role of her older brother Hansel.

In this incarnation of the famous story, Arterton and Renner will be playing older versions of the characters. This take “is set 15 years after the siblings killed the witch who kidnapped them. Hansel and Gretel have now evolved into bounty hunters who pursue witches.” The film is expected to film for eight weeks in between Renner’s two tentpole projects Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and The Avengers.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo star Noomi Rapace was said to be in the running for the Gretel role, but things didn’t go in her favor. With the bounty hunting twist placed on the characters we hope it gives Arterton an outlet to show some range. Her last few films have done nothing but highlight her looks. Can we have a kick-ass chick alongside Renner?

What do you think of Renner and Arterton as Hansel and Gretel?

wb logo 2 1 11 kc Warner Bros Wins 2010 Box Office Crown With $4.8 Billion

For the past couple years it seemed as if Paramount had been sitting at the top as the highest grossing studio in Hollywood, but they fell short in 2010. According to reports, the studio fell by the wayside last year to Warner Bros who earned an estimated $4.8 billion in worldwide ticket sales. That’s a lot of mulah for 12 months of sub-par blockbusters.

Warner Bros chief Jeff Robinov announced the big news today saying that the studio set an industry record. They bested their gross from last year, which was an even $4 billion. Domestically, Warners also earned $1.884 billion, making it number one in the market, and $2.9 billion overseas. They had five films gross over $100 million domestically, and seven have internationally.

Here are the top seven international earners for the studio:

“We are so proud of these incredible accomplishments, which were made possible through the global efforts of an exceptional group of people who collaborated to create, produce, market and distribute more than two dozen films this past year,” Robinov said.

Here’s how the other studios fared domestically:

  • Paramount – $1.71 billion
  • Fox – $1.48 billion
  • Disney – $1.46 billion
  • Sony -  $1.28 billion
  • Universal -  $885.2 million)
  • Summit – $518.8 million
  • Lionsgate – $516.9 million.

January Jones Talks Emma Frost

January Jones as Emma Frost 3 8 9 10 kc January Jones Talks Emma Frost

One of the many, and we do mean many stars of Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming film X-Men: First Class has decided to open up about the film. January Jones, who plays Emma Frost in the comic adaptation recently spoke with the Los Angeles Times about her latest role and the pressure that comes with playing such a risque character. Frost may have psychic powers but she’s not exactly known for her mind if you know what we mean. Find out what the actress revealed about the new vision for the character…

Even though First Class takes place in the sixties, and Jones is currently starring in the TV drama “Mad Men,” which takes place in the same decade she claims that the characters are nothing a like.

“When I heard that this installment of 'X-Men’ was gonna take place in the ’60s I was like, 'Oh my God, you must be kidding me!’” Jones said. “But I read the script and familiarized myself with the character of Emma Frost. She’s so, so far from Betty and from 'Mad Men,’ and it takes place in that time but it doesn’t feel like a period movie.”

On Frost’s traditional barely there costumes:

“The costumes are insane,” Jones added. “It’s a lot of very body-conscious stuff. If you look at the comic book, she’s barely dressed. She’s got quite the bod, which is very intimidating.”

On getting in shape for the role:

“I’m thinking, 'I’m supposed to be doing crunches on the plane,” she said. “How am I gonna get buff in one day? I’m a petite person, so I didn’t want to go into a strict workout and eating regime. I would have disappeared entirely, and she’s very busty, very voluptuous, so I didn’t want to get rid of any of my curves.”

She also revealed a little tidbit about her superpower. Her character has the ability to give her skin a diamond consistency, which most of us saw in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.  According to Jones, “I don’t have to do all the crazy prosthetics… When I morph into my diamond form, it’s all done on computer.”

X-Men First Class is scheduled to theaters on June 3, 2011.

What do you think of Jones’ take on the character? Do you think she can pull it off?

First Cast Photo From Red Dawn Remake With Chris Hemsworth

red dawn 4 1 11 kc First Cast Photo From Red Dawn Remake With Chris Hemsworth

The Red Dawn remake is one of those films that are out of sight, out of mind. Unless you’ve been following it feverishly you don’t really care that it exists. The movie stars a young and attractive cast of up and comers including Thor’s Chris Hemsworth and fellow Aussie Isabel Lucas. “Friday Night LightsAdrianne Palicki, as well as Josh Hutcherson and Connor Cruise (as in Tom’s son) are just some of the notables. The first cast photo for the movie popped up over on The Daily Blam, and we have to admit, it leaves much to be desired.

The original Red Dawn starred Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, and Jennifer Grey as members of a rag tag group (nicknamed The Wolverines) whose town is invaded by Russian forces. In the remake, the Russians won’t be coming, but the Chinese will take their place. The movie experienced a delay last summer after MGM hit another financial roadblock, then some script excerpts were leaked, which Chinese officials deemed as offensive.

We’re assuming that the above photo is a random promotional shot. Jeffrey Dean Morgan also stars in the movie, yet he’s nowhere to be found here. What’s up with that?

What do you think of the new Wolverines?

james cameron and arnold James Cameron Says it Would Be Fun to Work With Arnold Schwarzenegger Again

This week the Governator became no more. Actor turned politician Arnold Schwarzenegger has come to the end of his term as Governor of California. Now that he’ll have more time on his hands a lot of people are wondering whether or not he’ll return to Hollywood. Earlier today, frequent Schwarzenegger collaborator James Cameron spoke at a special preview event for the upcoming 3D adventure film Sanctum, where he was asked if he’d be open to working on a new movie with the recently unemployed star.

Here’s what Cameron had to say about the idea of a future collaboration between the two:

Possibly. It’s probably more likely that we might work together on something non-film. Because we’re both really passionate advocates and activists for the environment and climate change, renewable energy, and so on. The strides that he made while in office he sees not only as part of his legacy but the foundation for some of the things he wants to do beyond that.

The idea of making a movie together is always a fun concept. I’m tied up for the next five years and Arnold tends to be rather impatient when he sets his sights on goals. So I don’t know how well that’s going to work out because I’ve signed on for two more Avatar films, which is a big chunk.

We’re surprised that he only said five years including Avatar 2 and 3, didn’t it take almost three or four to shoot the first one? As for Schwarzenegger, he’s been out of the game for a long time and it’s uncertain if his audience is still out there. Everyone can’t pull a Sylvester Stallone and stay relevant by revamping eighties antics for today’s movie goers. Is there room for both of them?

Do you want to see Cameron and Schwarzenegger back in the big screen again?

Roger Ebert Adds 24-Year-Old Blogger to ‘At the Movies’

ebert1 4 11 Roger Ebert Adds 24 Year Old Blogger to At the Movies

It’s hard to believe how much Roger Ebert has gone through, but one thing is for sure, he doesn’t let anything stop him from sharing his opinion and he is always pushing the boundaries of intelligent entertainment journalism. He’s managed to keep himself out of the “old timers” group and blog himself to the the fore-front of new media. His most recent example of this is replacing formerly the announced host of his new Siskel & Ebert spin-off movie review show, Elvis Mitchell, former film critic for The New York Times, with 24-year-old movie blogger Ignatiy Vishnevetsky.

Last year, Ebert announced on his blog that Mitchell would be co-hosting the show alongside Christy Lemire, film critic for The Associated Press. For one reason or another, it was announced by Ebert’s wife, Chaz Ebert and an executive producer of the new show that Mitchell had decided to bow out and “was no longer associated with the program.”

Immediately they went on the hunt for someone to replace Mitchell, and Ebert found someone that would not only challenge what people were expecting, but also make all the film bloggers and writers out there dead jealous. There’s no doubt that everyone will be tuning in if only to judge Vishnevetsky and then fiercely tear him apart of praise him in blog posts.

Apparently Vishnevetsky, who was originally from Russia, moved to Chicago where he would regularly host screenings in which Ebert would attend.

"I was struck by the depth and detail of his film knowledge, and by how articulate he was," Ebert said.

Vishnevetsky which according to /Film is pronounced "Ig.nah.tee Vish.na.vet.ski,"currently writes for Mubi.com and The Chicago Reader as well as being the co-founder of the Chicago based, indie film site Cine-File.info.

He will be hosting the show along with original host Christy Lemire, a film critic for The Associated Press.

The new show premieres on January 21.

Will you be tuning in? Are you interested to see how Vishnevetsky will do?

Interview: Garrett Hedlund for Country Strong

Garrett Hedlind in Country Strong 4 1 11 kc Interview: Garrett Hedlund for Country Strong

Garrett Hedlund is on his way to the top. The Minnesota native who made his feature film debut as a teenager alongside Brad Pitt in 2004’s Troy, has been quietly working ever since. He appeared in the football drama Friday Night Lights, the urban crime thriller Four Brothers, and most recently the long awaited Disney sequel Tron Legacy. This month he’s taking it down a notch as an old fashioned southern boy, who has an amazing voice. Hedlund stars in Country Strong, a drama that follows a music superstar who’s trying to redeem herself after a hard fall.

Last month we spoke to Hedlund about the shift from a tentpole like Tron to a simple redemption tale like Country Strong. The actor revealed the amount of training it took to pull off his performance scenes, and the amazing artists who helped meld his novice talent. It was a lot harder than he thought it would be. Check out our interview…

What made you take on this project?

Garrett Hedlund: I’d been sent the script and been told that if I responded to it, Shana[ Feste] would fly up to Vancouver where I was [I was filming Tron at the time], and meet with me over it. I remember reading the script and having tears in my eyes by the end of it. I really wanted her to come up and have this meeting. I felt honored that she would come all the way up to Vancouver to meet with me on it. It’s tricky you know, it’s like you read a tagline or a synopsis that says ‘triangular love affair that takes place on a 10 city tour’ your immediate thoughts are to set it aside or else they could have explained it a little bit differently. But Shana’s just so incredibly talented and wonderful and for her to write this and direct it the way she did and it being her second film I just feel so proud to be a part of it and proud for her.

Did you have any musical experience before this role?

GH: No. I couldn’t play at the beginning. The guy Neal Casal, who’s the lead guitarist for The Cardinals from Ryan Adams and The Cardinals had stopped by my place and four days a week we’d be playing all day, early Hank Senior songs and just things to play that had chord progression and we’d go to the studio and record to chart the progression. That was for four months and I moved out to Nashville a month and a half before and stayed at Tim’s [McGraw] ranch, a cabin. Just like anything it takes time to gain the abilities. You’ve gotta fall on your face so many times and you gotta look silly in front so many people before you finally start finding the ability and finding confidence within the approvals of others.

What do you like about your character Beau?

GH: I like just the soul of him. He’s kind of a young Kris Kristofferson. Sort of poetic and tender, and just happy to be playing for a bunch of hard working people that like to have a beer while they listen to good music. This was a happy home for him. I think I like the message of what he was about at the end of the day. Choosing love over fame. That was a big one. When that line comes up in the film I think the whole audience is going to be questioning this key line and formulate what their opinion is on it.

Garrett Hedlund and Leighton Meester 4 1 11 kc Interview: Garrett Hedlund for Country Strong

How does it feel to have played in dive bars and stadiums?

GH: I prefer the dive bars. It was great. I remember throughout the preparation for the guitar thinking in my mind alright, most of these guys I always see them cut in close to the fingers and obviously they have a hand double just going at it. They’re mocking chords when the camera’s further away and I was imagining this in fear that I would have to do this. Like I wanted to be able to do everything on my own. It was like these scenes are beautiful and I’ll work on these scenes and I can’t wait to do this with Gwyneth, Tim, and Leighton, these scenes. But the performing now, can we just get this over with? Our first time of performing for an audience was at The Stage [On Broadway], well the first one was “Silver Wings” but the first one we filmed was at The Stage. I just remember having so much fun up there but it also helps because I felt very great about the songs and having Hayes Carll who I admire so much as a singer-songwriter, who’s very parallel to this character, who has a real Blaze Foley kind of grit to him, so playing the songs and when you’re having fun and you’re confident and when the songs are good the audience enjoys it so it’s not hard for them to partake and just kind of really cheer and be genuine with it.

Were you a fan of country music before making this film?

GH: I was. I grew up on a farm where we had one radio station and it was all country. So that’s why Tim McGraw would be filling the airwaves then, and I’d be in the tractor listening to Tim’s songs and Faith’s [Hill] songs and then for him to play my father in Friday Night Lights and I got up on stage with him in 2004 and sang “I like it, I love it” but I wasn’t a country singer you know? I was like, “Can I sing, “Don’t take the girl?’” He said, ‘No, you’ll sing “I like it, I love it.” I said, ” But I don’t know the words to it.” He’s like, ‘You’ll catch on.’ ‘But why can’t I sing don’t –?’ ‘You’re not singing “Don’t take the girl!” So I’m up there kind of mouthing with him [singing] I like it, I love it. But then his guidance with this was great because he just said, you know, ‘You’ve just got to live and breathe country music. There’s thousands of people out here who are incredibly talented trying to gain success, so you need the scales that are raised to be high.’ To really live and breathe country music.

It sounds like you were surrounded by a solid group of professionals.

GH: I got to work with this guitar coach out there, this guy Rob Jackson who’s kind of the best of the best in guitar training out there and then go to the studio everyday and work with this producer Frank Liddell and engineer Luke Wooten. I’ve been working with a lot of incredible people. So I was kind of taken in by these people who were trying to help me succeed the way I wanted to succeed. Once they saw a possibility we just started running for that door.

Tron Legacy Kevin and Sam 14 12 10 kc Interview: Garrett Hedlund for Country Strong

How was going from shooting on a Vancouver sound stage for Tron Legacy to being on location in Nashville for this?

GH: It was close to like a 67 or 70 day shoot for Tron on stage, in the suit. You can’t even sit don’t during the day because of all the cables that divide the foam rubber and all the electrical circuits. We had these stools that were tall with a bicycle seat on them and you’re just looking at a blue screen all day. And then to being able to just wear some Levi’s jeans and a button up it, it was exactly what I wanted. It was different.

It was more real, because you were actually out in Nashville making country music.

GH: Yeah, I’d become a family with so many of the locals out there. By the time we were filming I was going to a lot of the lower Broad spots and a lot of these young musicians, or even the guys in my band like Chris Scruggs would be up at Robert’s every night. Chris Scruggs is the grandson of Earl Scruggs, who’s like the Godfather of the banjo, and Randy Scruggs. You know it’s a famous family. There was a documentary done about them in the seventies, Randy Scruggs played the guitar on my tracks for “Chances Are” and stuff like this. I mean on Youtube there’s like black and white videos of him and Earl Scruggs and Bob Dylan all in a room playing and Randy Scruggs is just 17 and won’t take his eyes off Dylan and now he’s like 57 playing the guitar for me.

How was it performing in front of those real crowds?

GH: Basically, I was becoming a lot more comfortable with the auditorium scenes by just getting up on stage and doing it. One time at the Station Inn I got up and the table right in front of me, well this guy named Jim Lauderdale, he played a lot with George Jones. He was in Gwyneth’s band as a guitarist and he was playing at The Station Inn and at intermission he took me back and he said , ‘I want you to teach my band how to play “Chances Are” and get up and sing it for the audience.” I said, ‘All right.’ So there I am after six or seven months of learning how to play the guitar now I’m teaching this band how to play. We get up on stage and play it and right in front is Gwyneth and Chris Martin and Caleb the lead singer of Kings of Leon, and Faith Hill, and Dierks Bentley. It was one of the greatest nights of my life.

Garrett Hedlund and Leighton Meester in a Bar Interview: Garrett Hedlund for Country Strong

With all this musical training is this something that you’re going to keep doing?

GH: Of course on my own time. It’s funny because I was on set and Terrence Howard came up to play a role in On the Road, and we’d work together on Four Brothers and we became really close and he played a lot of guitar on that and I would just sit back. He’d show me how to play but I couldn’t. The night we wrapped in Montreal he came to my room with a bottle and a guitar, and we got to take turns. We came up with a thing like, ‘You play one. I’ll play one.’ We must have played 15 songs a piece.

Have you wrapped On the Road?

GH: I just did yesterday morning [as of December 12, 2010].

So what was that experience like?

GH: It was a guerrilla shoot with the most incredible family. Walter Salles directed it and he's put so much work into this film over the last six or seven years. I've been attached since September of '07 trying to get this project made. Being on set during the first day like, 'we're fucking filming On the Road‘ to today's the day after we just finished it. It was unfortunate to part with a family you've come to love so immensely on this journey.

Now that you’ve wrapped that film, what do you have coming up next?

GH: Nada. I’m very fortunate to be a part of these projects and I’m very proud of them. I’ll be able to sort of sit back and read some books that I haven’t caught up on and try to enjoy the time a little more.

justin beiber1 4 10 Justin Bieber Showing Off His Abilities in New Clip For Never Say Never

Never Say Never gives us an inside look at the 16 year old music sensation Justin Bieber. The Canadian native went from a talented kid to the cause of mass swooning and his name has even been associated with flu-like symptoms. Though I neither have Beiber-fever, nor hate the kid (like certain people like to do to ridiculously wealthy, successful youths), I’m somewhere in between empathetic and indifferent. BUT the one thing that even I have to admit is that the kid’s got talent. Though they’ve blown his life into a media-circus, at the heart of it all, you have a talented kid who loves music.

It’s hard to look away from anyone who can cause such mass-hysteria with the beat of a drum…

See! If you buy your kid the drums, he’ll become a pop-sensation, guaranteed! The film has been directed by the cinematic music, dance sensation, Jon Chu (Step Up 3D) and will be distributed by Paramount. There’s no doubt that this will take Bieber from flu like symptoms to the plague.

Let’s just hope he follows the Justin Timberlake path and not the path of Michael Jackson, Lindsey Lohan, Britney Spears… You get the idea. Though he’s a success, the odds are against him, but if there’s one thing this film it shows that the kids got some real character. Let’s hope it’s not just marketing.

Never Say Never will hit theaters on February 11, 2011 and it will be in 3D.

What do you think of the new clip Never Say Never? Will you be seeing the film for Valentine's Day?

IMAX Breaks New Records in 2010 and Releases 2011 Film Slate

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 09:39 AM PST

imax1 4 10 IMAX Breaks New Records in 2010 and Releases 2011 Film Slate

Well someone had a good year in 2010, IMAX! The screens are prettier and your wallet is a tad more empty — but sometimes it’s worth it. The IMAX Corporation announced that for the fifty-two weeks in 2010, IMAX DMR global gross box office was able to double their previous years income and rake in a record total of $546 million in 2010.

Amidst the bragging, lets take a look at if it’s worth the extra money, where they’re taking risks, and their upcoming 2011 release slate which they’re convinced will set new records come 2012…

"IMAX proves time and again to be the magic formula that keeps the excitement of movie-going alive and there is no greater proof of this than the 100% year over year uptick in IMAX's 2010 box office revenues," said Paul Dergarabedian president of the box-office division of Hollywood.com, "With nearly $600 million in worldwide box office and same-store revenues up an incredible 50%, the premium IMAX format continues to be a key contributor to the success of more and more big studio titles."

Basically, as long as they can make you believe the film is more magical and therefore charge you extra money, IMAX will keep making money. Sadly, a number of films are relying on looks, gimmicks and filming popular sequels and/or blockbusters in the medium, instead of breaking new ground.

Though I could complain more, the company has been able to keep their edge with experimental documentaries like Hubble 3D, Under the Sea 3D and Deep Sea 3D, which managed to make $41 million at the box office. Though they didn’t list how much they cost and I’m guessing it was more than they made, if there’s one good thing the big cheesy blockbusters it’s these documentaries, so I say, keep going! Just make sure you don’t miss out on thee best part of IMAX for more 3D madness…

"Our 2010 box office results reflect our model of showcasing the biggest blockbuster titles, whether they are 2D or 3D, our network expansion and the significant increase in box office generated from our existing theatres," said Richard L. Gelfond, CEO of IMAX Corporation. “Looking ahead to 2011, we have more visibility into our future film slate than we have ever had, we will grow the size of our global network…"

Though they claim that 3D doesn’t have anything to do with their sudden increase in cash-flow, there has to be something to it because thy seem to be planning on a big year and nine out of their thirteen releases in 2011 will be in 3D…

All that being said, they seem to be finding a balance with their films and no one can deny the look of them.

Check out some other fun, IMAX Box Office statistics:

  • Domestically, 9 of the top 10 grossing films were released into the IMAX network
  • A record 16 DMR titles were released to the IMAX® theatre network compared to 13 in 2009
  • 24 of the last 25 IMAX DMR titles opened Number 1 at the box office on their opening weekend
  • 39% of IMAX box office was generated overseas in 2010, compared to approximately 26% in 2009

What do you think of IMAX? Is it worth the extra cash? Or are they just using it on film’s you already want to see and therefore just making you pay more for them?
