natalie mendoza 29 12 10 kc Natalie Mendoza Exits Spider Man Turn Off the Dark
Julie Taymor and U2’s Broadway musical Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark has become a nightmare. Not only were the preview shows plagued by accidents, but several of the show’s actors have been injured, and now one of the leads have decided to “exit stage left.” According to The New York Times, Natalie Mendoza who played Arachne in the production is leaving.

No official reason has been given as to why Mendoza wants out, considering that the show is still in previews. The Times received their confirmation from two undisclosed sources close to the production. Apparently, the lawyers are still trying to hammer out the right words to use in explaining the actress’ departure.
This is an embarrassing and hard blow to the production considering the character’s prominence in the show. Arachne isn’t a character from the Spider-Man comic, but she was created by director and co-writer Taymor specifically for the show. And from what we’ve heard, the second act of the play centers around the villain and her interaction with the webslinger.
Prior to her leaving, Mendoza had suffered a concussion after taking part in a stunt gone wrong during the musical. Despite all the negative press, Turn Off the Dark continues to rake in the money. We wonder if people are buying tickets to see a good show, or if they just want to see a train wreck?
What do you think of Mendoza leaving Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark?

    javier bardem12 27 10 b Biutiful: Movie Review
All I could think after watching this film is that I needed to see some beauty in the world before I just walked off a cliff… Yes there’s darkness in the world but does it really need to be THAT dark? Where is the joy? The happiness? The LIFE part of life? Bad things do happen and inIñárritu’s own way they are very beautiful but it’s a hard to commit to a film like this because of just how relentless it is. It’s a brave move for Iñárritu and Bardem, with beautiful aspects, but is it worth it…

    The Players:

    • Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu
    • Writer: Alejandro González Iñárritu, Armando Bo, Nicolás Giacobone
    • Actors: Javier Bardem, Maricel Álvarez, Hanaa Bouchaib, Guillermo Estrella, Eduard Fernández, Cheikh Ndiaye, Diaryatou Daff
    • Music by: Gustavo Santaolalla
    • Cinematography by: Rodrigo Prieto

    The Plot:

This is a story of a man in free fall. On the road to redemption, darkness lights his way. Connected with the afterlife, Uxbal is a tragic hero and father of two who’s sensing the danger of death. He struggles with a tainted reality and a fate that works against him in order to forgive, for love, and forever.

    The Good:

    • Javier Bardem: He’s honest, vulnerable and once again shows that he’s incredibly interesting to watch even through difficult material. Once again he gives one hell of a performance and his charisma shines through in this film, making him watchable even when the film keeps pushing him further and further into nothingness.
    • Beautiful Shots: There is no doubt that Biutiful is quite beautiful. Iñárritu and his cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto do an absolutely amazing job of making just about every shot in this film a portrait. From the amazing use of colors, to the way they shot the city itself, you felt as if you could almost smell the world around you because the picture was so rich.
    • Power in Honesty: There are a lot of hard truths to accept in this film, and they do a good job of keeping the characters honest. No one ever really becomes a hero and though our lead character tries to do right, he’s faulted. Everything from the characters, to the writing, to the style of this film were extremely honest which is what makes it so powerful.

    The Bad:

    • Hard to Take: It’s one thing to have one big, horrible event happen, but when you have have several, back to back with almost no line of hope it starts to wear at you. Again, I applaud the director for making the choice to go there and doing it so well, but it’s not an easy journey for the audience.
    • Religious: Though this is a film where it makes sense to have religion, you have a story that transcends any belief system, in fact you have a man that is basically a mystic and yet religion can’t help but perpetually seep into the story and the plot. In fact there are ways of seeing this as one long parable. Though this kind of makes sense to the story, it’s something that always irks me when you have to accept a religion to be true in order to go with the story.

    Overall:

Yes one can argue that there’s beauty in everything and that bad things do happen, but at the heart of this story is only darkness, the kind of darkness that penetrates your soul, leaving you with the kind of nightmare you can’t wake up from, the kind of ultimate fear that we all have and cannot escape — it’s an interesting idea and well presented but does leave you wondering, did I really need to go there?

    Rating: 6.5/10

Biutiful will open for a one-week Oscar qualifying run in New York (Sunshine) and Los Angeles (AMC Century City) on December 29, 2010 and will open wider on January 28, 2011.

another year jim and ruth hugging LA 11 15 10 Another Year: Movie Review
I walked out of the screening of Another Year with a quote from Eddie Izzard’s stand-up routine “Dresses to Kill” in my head. I know it’s an odd comment but bear with me for a second. Izzard said during his routine: “…kind of ‘a room with a view with a staircase and a pond’-type movies. Films with very fine acting, but the drama is rather sort of subsued and – subsumed … You know, just folded in and everything’s people opening doors. ‘Oh, I’m – oh, what? Well, I've – oh.’ ‘What is it, Sebastian? I’m arranging matches.’ ‘Well, I – I thought you – … I’d better go.’ ‘Yes, I think you’d better had.’”
This is very much that kind of an English film, but this one is at its best, where the strong subtleties of the characters are so well done that they can compete with the explosions of American cinema…

    Players:

    The Plot:

Another Year is the story of a married couple who have managed to remain blissfully happy into their autumn years. Over the course of four seasons they are are surrounded by friends, colleagues, and family who all seem to suffer some degree of unhappiness

    The Good:

    • The Acting: So subtle. So clear. So specific. So great for the reasons below…
    • The Script: So natural and realistic it FELT like we were a part of the characters lives. We could laugh with them, know what they were thinking without them having to speak, and see their pain without any tears/words.
    • The Character Development: Every character introduced we leave the film feeling like they’re a family member we’ve known our entire lives. They managed to find those key moments in life that tell us the deepest darkest secrets about those around them and then play with the ideas and when needed, leave them behind.
    • The Subtly: When things are so well written, so well acted, and so well presented, you don’t need much to go a long way. They had the cards stacked in their favor and were able to take advantage of it by allowing things to just wash over you instead of forcing things on you. Which leads us to…
    • The Confidence in the Acting: I love it when the performances are so strong and the director so trusting that he can just allow the audience to simply look at the actors without trying to manipulate the viewers with a directors-bag-o-tricks. Without any music, dialogue or manipulative tools, Leigh allows us to simply look at the characters on the screen and let us sit with them and understand them.
    • The Bold Choice of Nothing: Many times in the film Leigh makes the bold choice to do nothing and just let the actors feel out the scene. It’s a risk because often times this could be considered boring, but because he sets up the scenes so well, the pauses actually help to build the tension and once again tell the story extremely well.

The Bad (which isn’t so bad):

    • Not for Everyone: This is not the easiest film to watch for the main stream audience, but it’s extremely well made for people who know how to sit down to a film that will slowly unfold and then sneak under their skin.

    Overall:

If you’re like me and have been dying for some great performances in a solid film, this is a great pick.

    Rating: 8.5/10

The Green Hornet is based on the long running radio turned television series that ran during the 1930s and 1960s. The film stars Seth Rogen as Britt Reid, the heir to a major media conglomerate who spends his free time fighting crime as a vigilante hero after the death of his father (Tom Wilkinson). He's typically aided by his driver Kato (Jay Chou), who just happens to be a martial arts master.
As you might have figured from the posters, Christoph Waltz plays the main villain in the film, while Diaz’s character works with Rogen’s Britt Reid. Personally, the character poster featuring Waltz is our favorite and the French group version comes in as a close second.
The Green Hornet opens in theaters everywhere on January 14, 2011.
What do you think of the posters? Which one is your favorite?

This year’s Sundance Film Festival has a number of classic Sundancers returning this year including Morgan Spurlock of Super Size Me fame with his latest film, The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, we also have Director Azazel Jacobs teaming up with another festival champ John C. Reilly, and finally a more thrilling return from Open Water filmmakers Chris Kentis and Laura Lau with Silent House. Find out more about all the films below…

Morgan Spurlock's The Greatest Movie Ever Sold:

spurlock12 19 10 Sundance 2011 First Looks: Terri, Silent House, The Greatest Movie Ever Sold
    Official Sundance Synopsis:
Acclaimed filmmaker and master provocateur Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) returns to the Sundance Film Festival with tongue-in-cheek perfection as he examines the world of product placement, marketing, and advertising by making a film financed entirely by product placement, marketing, and advertising. We live in an age where it's tough even to walk down the street without someone trying to sell you something. It's at the point where practically the entire American experience is brought to us by some corporation. Utilizing cutting-edge tools of comic exploration and total self-exploitation, Spurlock dissects the world of advertising and marketing by using his personal integrity as currency to sell out to the highest bidder. Scathingly funny, subversive, and deceptively smart, The Greatest Movie Ever Sold shines the definitive light on our branded future as Spurlock attempts to create the "Iron Man of documentaries," the first ever "docbuster"! He may very well have succeeded.

Azazel Jacob’s Terri with John C. Reilly:

Terri 12 29 10 Sundance 2011 First Looks: Terri, Silent House, The Greatest Movie Ever Sold
    Official Sundance Synopsis:
Director Azazel Jacobs (Momma's Man) returns to Sundance with a tale that will speak to anyone who has ever felt insecure or misunderstood. In other words . . . everyone. Orphaned to an uncle who is ailing, mercilessly teased by his peers, and roundly ignored by his jaded teachers, Terri finds himself alienated and alone. But when the dreaded vice principal, Mr. Fitzgerald, sees a bit of himself in the boy, they establish a friendship that encourages Terri to consider the possibility that life is something to be shared, even enjoyed, not just endured. Wonderfully enacted, perceptive, and honest, Terri perfectly captures the lonely life of an outcast. But we don't pity or laugh at him; we relate to him. Remaining true to himself in the face of adversity, Terri becomes an unlikely hero. Filled with heart and humor, Terri is a comedy about feeling alone, and discovering there are others who feel the same way.

It looked as if Toy Story 3 and The King’s Speech were going to ride a successful wave all the way to the Oscars considering their recent award nominations but unfortunately the WGA has thrown a monkey wrench into that plan. According to Variety, the screenplays for both films have been deemed ineligible by the Writer’s Guild of America. Burn!

The trade reports that the WGA ballots were recently mailed out and they featured 76 screenplays, 43 originals, and 33 adapted. Due to their strict regulations the number of candidates this year is significantly less than last. The Guild requires that screenplays be produced under WGA jurisdiction and that they be formally submitted for consideration. This means that besides Toy Story 3 and The King’s Speech, other films to receive the cold shoulder include Another Year, Biutiful, Blue Valentine, The Ghost Writer, Made in Dagenham, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and Winter’s Bone.

    mad bastwards12 19 10 Sundance 2011: Mad Bastards Trailer
Seems like we might have another Australian gem at this years Sundance Film Festival 2011. Last year everyone was up blown away by Animal Kingdom (and rightly so) and this year the early buzz is about another Aussie film, Mad Bastards from director Brendan Fletcher or as he’s known as “Barefoot” — the heat seems to be doing something right to them out there because they seem to keep coming up with quality films that land in competition at Sundance.
The first trailers for the film is beginning to make it’s rounds around the web because they uploaded it for the Sydney Festival earlier this month. Check out the trailer now….

Mad Bastards Trailer for Sydney Festival from Pollen Digital on Vimeo.
It seems like it’s got one hell of a story at the heart of it and the use of colors and the richness of some of these shots are enough to peak my interest!
    Official Sundance Synopsis:
TJ is a mad bastard, and his estranged 13-year-old son Bullet is on the fast track to becoming one, too. After being turned away from his mother's house, TJ sets off across the country to the Kimberly region of northwestern Australia to make things right with his son. Grandpa Tex has lived a tough life, and now, as a local cop, he wants to change things for the men in his community.
Crosscutting between three generations, Mad Bastards is a raw look at the journey to becoming a man and the personal transformation one must make. Developed with local Aboriginal communities and fueled by a local cast, Mad Bastards draws from the rich tradition of storytelling inherent in Indigenous life. Using music from legendary Broome musicians the Pigram Brothers, writer/director Brendan Fletcher poetically fuses the harsh realities of violence, healing, and family.

Jon Stewart 27 10 10 kc Poll: Is Jon Stewart the New Edward R. Murrow?
If you had doubts about Jon Stewart’s ability to inform the public we’ve got news for you! On Tuesday the New York Times compared the Comedy Central TV anchor to the likes of Edward R. Murrow, and for some reason that’s really pissed people off. Murrow was a serious newsman who worked on both radio and television (on CBS) during the early days of its inception. He was recently brought to the forefront of Hollywood’s consciousness when George Clooney made him a primary figure in his 2005 film Good Night, and Good Luck. With that being said, does Stewart sound like the second coming of the guy? Vote in our poll and let us know what you think…

Both Murrow and the equally respected Walter Cronkite were trusted sources of information for this country and when they spoke people listened — even the government.
In 1968, Cronkite spoke out about the stalemate in the Vietnam War; a month later, President Lyndon B. Johnson announced he would not seek re-election. In 1954, Murrow criticized the “Red Scare” tactics of Sen. Joseph McCarthy; thereafter, McCarthy’s popularity and influence rapidly declined.
Earlier this month (December 16), Stewart brought on a panel of 9/11 first responders to “The Daily Show” to advocate for the Senate to pass the the bill pledging federal funds for those who sacrificed their health to save lives that day. Guess what? The bill was passed and a lot of people think Stewart had something to do with it. But what do you think?
Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.
Can Stewart be compared to such serious journalists considering his comedic overtones and his network? Can he be seen as a political force when he wants to be?
Explain why you voted the way you did below.

We’ve got to be honest, the usage of children to illustrate a scary premise really grinds our gears. As soon has we heard the child’s voice and saw the drawing we knew where this was going. What is this “V” meets “The Walking Dead?” And who knew Moon Bloodgood was in this? Between this show and Spielberg’s other series “Terra Nova” what will people tune in for? At least this show has an actual trailer.
    Official Synopsis:
FALLING SKIES is an exciting new series from DreamWorks Television and executive producer Steven Spielberg.
